Peter Zemmer is the only Alto Adige producer with Riserva certification for Pinot Grigio, making the Riserva “Giatl” 2016 the Alto Adige’s first and only DOC Riserva Pinot Grigio, and one of the few mountain-style Pinot Grigios from anywhere in the world. Alto Adige DOC regulations require a minimum 24 months’ aging before release; neighboring Trentino requires just 12 months of aging.
“Giatl,” meaning “little property” or “little vineyard” in the local dialect, refers to a nearby hamlet of the same name. The wine originates in “Grand Cru” terroir south and southwest of the village, a half-moon-shaped outcrop rising 13- to 16-feet above the surrounding area, the company says. The site spans 24 acres, of which two-thirds are owned or leased by the Zemmer family. Grapes come from the best six acres, four parcels with vines ranging 15- to 30-years in age. Here, instead of the sandy soil prevalent in surrounding vineyards, sand, shingle and chalk dominate. Heat-storing rocky sediment facilitates a longer hang-time. Do not let the rating for you, this was a totally fun and thoroughly enjoyable CabSauv!! Such delightful nuance in the decidedly medium weight mid-week winner. Set aside the varietal expectation and you will discover a balanced and articulate food enhancing/cleansing wine. From the western edge of Champagne, in the hamlet of Drachy, the Fallet family has been growing grapes since at least 1610. This rosé is half and half Meunier and Pinot, and has lots of texture, brambly fruit balanced by a virile and bright finish. It was excellent with our smoked trout soufflé! — 7 years ago

Earthy, elegant single-vineyard Barolo from the Bricco Luciani vineyard (in Piemontese dialect, bricco is the top of a hill, the portion with maximum sunshine) in Annunziata hamlet, to the west of La Morra, an area known for a lighter, more aromatic, approachable style. Crimson with orange hue at the rim of the glass. Brooding cherry. Subtly perfumed with notes tar, dark spice and licorice characteristic of the Nebbiolo grape and maybe hints of sloe (pacharán liquor). Long, sandy tannins. Intense — 4 years ago
Sori' is Piedmontese dialect for the sunny south face of a hill. 'But' or Butti is the name of the hamlet where Anna Maria and her husband Franco's house and cellar is located. I wish I could have this as my "table" wine. This Dolcetto is red with purple edges, light acidity notes of fresh blueberries. Brought back memories of my Nono's rustic wine. — 7 years ago
