T'ga Za Jug Vranec

LONGING FOR THE SOUTH

Yesterday I drank this very nice Macedonian semi-dry T'ga za Jug red wine.

The wine is made of the native grape variety Vranec. It has an intense red color, and the distinctive taste of raisins and raspberries, which make it a nice sweet treat (hence: semi-dry).

The wine is named after the poem ‘Taga za Yug’ of the Bulgarian poet Konstantin Miladinov (1830–1862), one of the Miladinov brothers, who originate from Ottoman Macedonia. Both brothers are thought to have laid the foundation of the Macedonian literary tradition.

‘Taga za Yug’ means ‘longing for the South’ (el anhelo por el Sur): "If I had an eagle's wings, I would rise and fly on them to our shores, to our own parts [...] Here are frost and snow and ashes, blizzards and harsh winds abound [...] There the sunrise warms the soul".

When it is cold outside, and fiercely raining, I can assure you that it makes you long for the sun that warms the soul. Drinking the T'ga za Jug wine in good company and nice surroundings makes for a wonderful or sometimes even better alternative.

Tikveš Vranec

Not as fantastic as my other Stobi obsession but very close. Pretty strong tannins but a great savoury flavour, a lovely heaviness in the mouth.. we’re ordering in more bottles ready for Christmas trip home! — 5 years ago

Special Selection Vranec 2013

Despite being 5 years old, there was very little color loss around the edges.
Aroma: Lots of black currant, plum, cooked fruit, black cherry skin, with a hint of anise on the finish.
Taste: Black Cherry skin, plum, cooked fruit, blackberry skin with a slight herbaceous finish. Med+ acid. Quite a bargain.

Vranec Veritas Reserve Vranac

What a wine! Extraordinary deep purple color, great smell on plums and dark fruit, full-bodied, complex multi-layered taste, rather oaky (barrique) and wild, rough tannins, medium plus aftertaste. Powerful, rustical, wild. I like it! But it should be consumed with a rich meal. — 6 years ago

Pinot Noir 2015

Powerful but smooth at the same time, a little acidic on tounge but rich in taste on palate, besides berry fruit I can taste some vanilla, aftertaste lasts for about half a minute. Requires some food if you ask me. — 7 years ago

Stanushina Rosé

Really delicious and smoother than many Rosé wines I have had. Nice fruit notes of ripe berries, but well balanced and not overly sweet at all. — 8 years ago

White flowers, dandelion, lemon, pepper.
Lush, creamy mouthfeel. I suspect full malolactic, no lees or oak. There's a whiff of Christmas in here...perhaps potpourri. Cinnamon. The nose is all subtlety, and the pallatte is a blanket of lemon, pear, underripe peach. If there were more acid it would be harsh. I paired with cheese pizza and was surprised that it seems disrespectful.
