Montevertine

Il Sodaccio Di Monte Vertine Toscano Sangioveto Canaiolo 1998

Drank 2h17 to 1Q18. I found it at a local store in dallas 2H17, for $30-$40. Bought all 8 bottles on a gamble. No idea how it was stored for the 19yrs, but it was very good. Held up well. The cork was an issue, but nothing a sieve couldn’t handle. — 7 years ago

Genevrières Meursault 1er Cru Chardonnay 2002

Wow. Any 15 year old wine is a gamble but this one paid off. Deep golden colour, almost shocking the contrast compared to the younger wines tasted beforehand. Nose is toasted sesame and popcorn, all oak and allusion - one of those wines that connects with memories. On the palate it is rich, textured, almost oily, resolving to succulent tropical fruit. Thrilling. — 8 years ago

Papera Ranch Zinfandel 2009

Best #Zinfandel producer out there (period), 7 years old and it's balanced, deep, fresh and most importantly fun to smell and taste! Dare I say this could age to 20 years? I'd take that gamble just to see what it's like, but side more with the fact it would be in fine drinking condition.
Here we have a splash of Carignane that adds depth, beep but not flamboyant fruit and spine to the structure. Blue and dark red fruits brood over a layer of roasted meat and subtle, ripe tannins and tweek of acidity on the finish.

Great example of Zinfandel. Contains what you would expect, plush red fruit and heat but made intriguing by the Carignane and restraint. Going online to buy some today.

Etienne Sauzet

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2008

A very sophisticated wine. Unexpectedly subdued on the nose initially, this put on weight aromatically and on the palate in the glass. Delicate flavors that are laser defined and huge persistence. I suspect this would be broader and more 'wow' in 5-10 years but, being Sauzet, it's a gamble holding out that long. Really detailed, fine stuff that left some excellent wines tasted alongside looking pretty plodding. — 9 years ago

Yes. I live in a city called Zaragoza. Near the regions of Cariñena, Campo de Borja, Calatayud and Somontano. I usually make it out to California once a year to see my dad and my brother who still live in SB.

Cuvée Lucia Merlot 2004

2004 wow! Hidden gem, it's still going strong, brimming with blackberry, and blueberry, nice slight licorice notes, you can still taste the skins, firm and inviting, little gravelly, and herbal notes too. I have yet to gamble on the longevity of Andrew Will and been disappointed, Midas.

Cockburn's

Porto 1963

Not as old bones as a previous bottle, this showed much younger indeed, a deep, layered medium rose color; whereas the other was tawny in color, and showed much more evolution on nose. Hmm eh, always a gamble opening old stuff, bottles almost never show identically....but such is the magic of wine!! What we had here was a gorgeous nose of cherry pie, date square and fig, with toffee, old leather and cinnamon. The palate was quite smooth and rich, big in the middle but still supple and streamlined, good acids remain and even a touch of tannin. This bottle still had another 10 years before it should have been opened. The alcohol was mostly covered on the finish. I drank it with pleasure over 5 days, the third was the best. Excellent stuff, though i preferred the more mature and complex bottle i had earlier the year! — 10 years ago

Curiosity got the best of me. Parker rated this 97 points and a local wine shop managed to get 1-2 cases and at $34/bottle, it was a gamble I was willing to take.

Color me surprised and impressed. 45mins-1hr of air time and 👌. Very purple in color, but the wine wasn't as heavy as it looked. Big aromatics...maple syrup, caramelized brown sugar, blueberry jam, faint smell of smoked meat. Very "pure" front and mid palate...nothing was overbearing or dominant one way or the other. Silky texture, rush of blue and black fruits, earthiness, toasted oak and milk chocolate. Very Napa cab-esque. Could see how some would think it was too extracted, but it doesn't touch a Caymus 40 in that category. At $34/bottle, this is a show stopper. Not worthy of 97pts, but probably the best sub $40 bottle of cabernet I've come across from Cali.

Love this thread. I'll have to look through my ratings but Cuttings is pretty close at 43 bucks. A local top restaurant has it on the menu and recently said he could order it for me in the mid 30s. So I guess that would be my vote

Just thumbed through my cab ratings, I second @Shay Aldriedge listing of Round Pond. Also maybe pocket 15 bucks and go Charles Krug Napa.

Seriously fucken good. Tried in tasting room and took the gamble, brought home, served at 18° and paid off. Dried oregano, candied orange peel and the sweeter side of juicy glazed cherries. Bright, juicy acidity and the feintest chalky tannins. This wine is absolutely gorgeous — 9 years ago

Nicolas Feuillatte

Millésimé Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2005

In its decline. Vinous profile, honey, candied lemon nose and flavors are present. Upon opening i perceived a flawed wine. However it wasn't flawed. Perfectly sound and actually quite good. It lost some minerality and fervent bubbles, but overall it was good. Vinous champagne is a gamble and this time we did okay. — 11 years ago
