LONGING FOR THE SOUTH
Yesterday I drank this very nice Macedonian semi-dry T'ga za Jug red wine.
The wine is made of the native grape variety Vranec. It has an intense red color, and the distinctive taste of raisins and raspberries, which make it a nice sweet treat (hence: semi-dry).
The wine is named after the poem ‘Taga za Yug’ of the Bulgarian poet Konstantin Miladinov (1830–1862), one of the Miladinov brothers, who originate from Ottoman Macedonia. Both brothers are thought to have laid the foundation of the Macedonian literary tradition.
‘Taga za Yug’ means ‘longing for the South’ (el anhelo por el Sur): "If I had an eagle's wings, I would rise and fly on them to our shores, to our own parts [...] Here are frost and snow and ashes, blizzards and harsh winds abound [...] There the sunrise warms the soul".
When it is cold outside, and fiercely raining, I can assure you that it makes you long for the sun that warms the soul. Drinking the T'ga za Jug wine in good company and nice surroundings makes for a wonderful or sometimes even better alternative.

New ice wine producer for me from Yakima Valley. Paired well with Hedy's ice cream & sorbet creation. Nice array of stone fruits, marmalade, nuts, dry pineapple, wet stones, very good soft minerality, beautiful acidity, a thick, rich well polished finish with just the right amount of (RS) sugar. — 8 years ago

Tastes good, easy to drink. Scott got drunk on 1.5 glasses. (Tried 11/11/2016 when we were being lazy and stayed in) — 8 years ago
Last of the last bottle of this unusual vintage. I miss this 2009 easy vintage, when we don't have any hail or frost 😢 — 9 years ago
Unlike ice cider or frost cider made in the United States and Canada, apples are frozen using refrigeration technology meaning the frost only goes one way--in. In nature, apples will freeze, thaw, freeze partially and unfreeze partially, moving sugars throughout the apples. You'll notice a difference in style here because the producer oxidizes the cider as a way to compensate for the artificial freezing process, but it's still a delightful dessert choice on a list. A rep told me to pour it over vanilla ice cream, but I'd rather just drink it straight. Notes of oak, caramel and baked fruit, it reminds me of a dreamy blend of sherry and Madeira. — 9 years ago
Yum! The perfect amount of bubbly for a dessert wine. Very sweet. Aromatic. — 10 years ago
"The 21" - a blend of all 4 vineyards, labeled as the 21st anniversary wine - from memory, there were severe frost issues necessitating the release of only 1 wine in 2006 - a little brown in the meniscus but a lovely nose with a bit of dirt, spice & smoke - restrained but satisfying on the palate with lovely lingering acidity on the back palate - very enjoyable & will hold the other one for a few years. — 10 years ago
In love with Alice and Olivier De Moor and their salty, buttery (in a good way) Aligoté. Nostril seared by frost. Spring blooming in a bottle. — 10 years ago
A fantastic example of floral Sauvignon Marlborough can produce. Beautiful bouquet of tropical fruits with a balanced acidity to suit all tastes! — 11 years ago

Moores. 2016. $18 on special. Surprisingly complex for a Macon Villages. Apparently an early frost helped super concentrate the surviving grapes. — 8 years ago
Really enjoyed this while on vacation in Bucyrus Ohio and at Cedar Point. — 8 years ago
Light. Refreshing. Well balanced with wild strawberries. I've been bitten by the rosé bug, look out! — 9 years ago
Aromas of apples, pears, peaches and a crisp morning frost. Crisp and clean in the mouth too. Tart apples trampling all over your tongue. Finishes with an airy-moussey feel. Outstanding for $10. — 10 years ago
Pear, wet stones and moss on the nose. Juicy pear on the palette finishing long with good acidity that makes me reach for another sip. The tannins have me thinking I've bitten into a golden apple. Lovely with nice toasted notes filling my head. — 10 years ago

Such a well balanced Sauv Blanc! Very pleasantly surprised, I️ really loved this one. Crisp and smooth with a wonderful oiliness and a bit of acidity but not too much. Makes my heart warm on these cold winter nights 😅 — 7 years ago
