Donelan

Obsidian Vineyard Syrah 2014

Donelan continues to cement its place as one of California’s foremost authorities on Syrah. Boisterous yet savory and precise, flavors of quinine, thyme, black minerals, sweat and game meet a plumper backdrop of fruit. It combines a Northern Rhône sensibility with an undeniably Californian juiciness. Exceptional. — 7 years ago

Great bottle, we had an intimate tasting with Joe Donelan a couple years back, all really nice wines but needed time to collect themselves. The Obsidian and Richards Family were our picks, were holding several 2012's. If you get a chance please try their rosé, one of my all time favorites.

Jamieson Ranch Vineyards

Double Lariat Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Ryan M
9.1

Very surprising for only $35. Took about 30 min to open up and another 30 let out the flavors. Ruby red, sweet oak, bing cherry, cassis, vanilla, light body with similarities to Rutherford style. I could see this showing well for another 5 years and hello to the high alcohol %!

Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is the southernmost winery in the Napa Valley, one of the world’s foremost winemaking regions. The estate’s more than 300 acres of gently rolling hills and terraced vineyards benefit from the cooling fog and breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay, climatic conditions that favor the production of exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The unique architecture of Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is reminiscent of a majestic western mountain lodge, replete with soaring ceilings, seating around a cozy fireplace, an observation gallery overlooking the barrel room and production area, and a spectacular wraparound veranda that affords sweeping views of the Napa Valley and San Pablo Bay.

La Grande Berge Givry 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

A glass is bursting with aromatics, the foremost a heady floral component reminiscent of Chambolle-Musigny. Alongside are fresh berries, red licorice, and baked stone. A sip is simultaneously concentrated and spry, with a long, energetic finish. — 8 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Wow. Simply outstanding.

There are a variety of things that make me believe in the comment above. Foremost are the tannins. Which, to some, may seem like an odd place to start. But, for me, I have been on a run of poorly integrated, overbearing tannins that make me think the wine will be drinkable when I'm nearing an age closer to death. This cuvée has a lovely fine grained tannin that allows the wine to sing. It is beautifully complementary and a testament that excellent wine can be made and enjoyed early in its life.

The oak treatment is a close second. Aged in 50% new oak, this balances and rounds everything out wonderfully.

Third,
#QPR. amazing value at $65.

A winner!

Great price first and foremost! Finally starting to feel like myself again. Strong flavors of pineapple and lemon, with subtle honey on the finish. Was very nice, but a little too aciditic and harsh on the palate for me. — 9 years ago

Hermann J. Wiemer

HJW Vineyard Riesling 2013

The Herman J. Wiemer vineyard is the oldest site the winery owns. Poor, gravelly soil offers good drainage and serves to limit vine vigor. As one might expect the 2012 HJW Riesling is the most austere, and notably the most acid-driven wine in the lineup. It's nervy, with a kind of twitchy energy, like a doe emerging from a lean winter. Fruit is not the foremost expression; rather there is poise, tension and intensity, along with lime pith, lovely textural minerality punctuated by saline. Sample — 10 years ago

Castello di Amorosa

La Rocca Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

This wine features a light golden straw tint with a nose of apples, pineapples and peaches. Big, pure fruit is what is showing here. The palate has a gorgeous mouthfeel, silky and creamy without the wood. The acidity is subdued, but still enough to handle pairing with a salad or seafood. Peach and apricot are foremost with a light touch of earth, but the fruit is the show. — 10 years ago

Listrac-Médoc Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

Wow. This clean-river smelling wine has a real loamy farmland pungency marked with a very strong spearmint note. The terroir is foremost, the wine structured. A great wine at a ridiculous price. Got this for 9$. Really a steal. The fruit is black currant but integrated. Haut Medoc steal. — 11 years ago

Yalumba

The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier 2015

Pale to mid Gold. At the Yalumba tasting. They are probably the foremost exponents of the Viognier grape in Australia and have been working with it for many years. Notes of apricot and quince. A mouth filling unctuous middle palate finishing with a refreshing Grapefruit bitterness. Will cellar. I would say up to 7 or 8 years. — 8 years ago

I'd like to thank two folks here. @Ron R foremost for the recommendation to buy this. And then @Paul T for teaching me some of the details of WineBid.

For the price, this is top shelf. At just over 10 years old, the tannins are superbly integrated. What was once in your face has evolved into an elegant, well balanced cuvée. A steal at $15!!!

Some of you may remember the post that I did back in March over a truly incredible bottle of 2012 Nine Suns. I took a Picture of the cork that said "we love you already". My 1st granddaughter!! The angel is just a few days old. She's already leaning for a sip of Verite!!! Smart Girl!!! I actually sent a text to my friend Howard right after I opened it and told him "I don't get it". I gave it four hours and boy was I wrong. Truly seamless, truly integrated, true perfection. It's young and needed a little time. My friend Kirk tells me all the time "the sign to a great bottle is that nothing stands out". That's because everything is seamlessly integrated." He's 100% correct. This fires on all cylinders but does it eloquently with finesse and grace. The only thing you have to focus on is not what is evident and in your face but what can be relished through countless layers of taste profiles. All I can say to this is Bravo!! 1st and foremost to my daughter and her little Angel Colette. 😇. — 8 years ago

Absolutely delicious 2015 Wines. Jauma pushing things forward with thoughtful, careful and effective (lack of) winemaking. Sulphur dioxide reduced and eliminated in some wines. Retaining stability is the hard part, with the reward being a difficult-to-describe feeling of life in the wines. First and foremost, is, as always, pristine purity of fruit. — 10 years ago

Elegantly built-up aromas and flavors, centered around peaches, gooseberries and orange blossom notes, framed by hints of oak, but first and foremost this is a modern and positively naked expression where tart fruit and minerality are driving forces. Thank you also to some of the most generous, caring, and supportive friends who gave us this bottle. Thanks Steve & Chris!!

Our twins are luckier than they know right now for having these people in their lives.

Okay, sorry, onto the wine. Deep, dark purple color in the glass. Big cherry and strawberry tones on the nose. Smells like Valentines Day. The flavor is disappointing. Maybe it needs more air or age, but rather tame and average. Great texture and easy to drink, but leaves one unsatisfied at the price level. Solid wine, with nice fruit, but isn't differentiated at all from other Napa Cabs yet alone a single vineyard of the quality of Stagecoach. Have 3 more bottles so we'll see how they progress.
