Saggi Vintners Collection Columbia Valley Sangiovese Blend 2015

9.2

A wonderful tasting put on by Classic Wine Storage featuring Long Shadows Winery. If you aren’t familiar with these wines, they are phenomenal WA state wines that are made by the likes of Randy Dunn, Phillipe Melka, Michel Rolland, John DuVall, and more.

Dominant Sangiovese with some cab and a splash of Syrah. Rich style sangio wine. Sweet oak, dirty cherries, herbs, and a high percentage/bitter dark chocolate.

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Blackberry, graphite, iron, clean linen, mild vanilla, really really subtle eucalyptus. Very fine, silky tannins. This really is a very good bottle of Napa cab. My nitpicks are that the structure could be more delineated, and I do catch some alcohol on the finish of the palate (its labeled 14.5 abv). Really curious to see what more time does to these; this is NOT 80s Dunn.

Supposedly this is the number one Riesling in WA state. Dry style. Petrol on the nose. Honey, apricot, bright acidity with a slate finish.

@Shay A: I have not had this particular Wash state Riesling however I will say the last one I had was bone dry and had a nose of petrol. I wonder if it’s a characteristic of these wines?
Shay A

Shay A Influencer Badge Premium Badge

@Bryan Kesting : Seems to be. On day 2, it was very similar to day 1 with a slight decrease in the petrol but it is unmistakable. I wouldn’t say this is bone dry, but it’s definitely an off dry style. Very nice.

I consumed the leftovers. So, Shay had a bit of a different experience. There is a bit of green apple here, but quite a bit more petrol. I can imagine there was more acidity, more green apple and less petrol than yesterday but this wine is still quite enjoyable and RATHER easy to drink. For the sub $20 price point, it is a solid wine, but if you pop the cork, drink the entire bottle. At $18/bottle, you shouldn't have any left over.

Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2012

Greg Ballington
9.3

Always love these Petite Sirahs from Mike Dunn, and this 2012 seems to be especially special. Dark purplish red. Overall lots of dark characteristics on the nose with tight bramble berries, black currants, spices, dried violets, a little cinnamon and even coriander. Even got a little gamey and savory with an hour or two in the glass. Heavy tannins (7/10) but smooth and full bodied. Kept beefing up as it sat open, currants on the attack, iron, smokey and a bit meaty. Larger in the mid-palate with some dark crushed rocks. Dark fruits coming through at the end after day one. Insanely dry and long with a nice little spice kick in the finish. Will drink well for the next decade or so. Drink till 2027. — 8 years ago

Jonata Winery

El Corazon de Jonata Santa Ynez Valley Syrah Blend 2005

Has potential. Even after 10 years lots of oak and tannin hide the fruit. This still needs 5-10 years till it's really ready to drink. The longevity of this wine is unbelievable, though frustrating at times. Dunn (and possibly Opus One in its Bordeaux style) may be the only wines that I have tried that may surpass Jonata in age worthiness within the new world. — 10 years ago

Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Somm David T
9.5

Feather is 100% Cabernet. This is made in coordination with Randy Dunn. On the nose, dark, lightly spiced currants. Black oil, loamy soils, black licorice and fresh floral bouquet. On the palate, the mouthfeel is thick & rich. There's a good presence of wood shaving. Rich, ripe blackberries, dark cherries, candied black plum, plum, black raspberries, loamy soils, dark rich moist earth, leather, tobacco, spice-box, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, vanilla, black licorice, violets and fresh red florals. Acidity is round and mouthwatering. The structure is big. The tension perfect as is the balance of fruit and earth. This is definitely a Parker wine. It's so easy to drink young, yet will cellar 10-15 years nicely. Photos of the tasting rooms hand blown glass lighting...lit up. Ringer of the night!!! This 2013 from Sebastiani #sebastiani was pretty impressive. After a couple Big Boys from Dunn and Insignia. A Bordeaux style blend is fruit forward with great tannin structure great mix of fruit, Refreshing and Reasonably Priced! Robert Parker of Wine Advocate Fame gave it a 97 Rating. Only 24.99 a bottle.
