Bodegas El Nido

Clio Jumilla Monastrell-Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

An absolute beast a wine! Needs a short decant to open up and let the glycerol smell and taste blow off. I decanted for 30 min.

Huge dark fruits, charcoally smokiness, and spice. Inky deep deep black color and of course it doesn't get any more full body than this.

Orin Swift Cellars

Machete Petite Sirah Blend 2013

A powerful blend of Grenache, Petite Syrah and Syrah from Orin Swift. Deep nose of dark fruit and chocolate. A full bodied wine that lingers on the palate as the lush fruit , tobacco and cocoa comes across with an exclamation point. We are drinking this in lieu of dessert. — 11 years ago

My list is short - him, Jennifer Beloz or Jayson Woodbridge for "mainstream" and Paul Hobbs or Ken Wright for insider "cult" following.

Everything you'd expect and more. All the rich dark fruit, chocolate and lush purple flowers, but none of the sticky over-ripe flavors. So balanced. — 9 years ago

Belle Glos

Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Winner of the most obnoxious wax job this year. And to boot, adding a pull tab?

I was expecting better things from this wine. To me, it wasn't appreciably different from Meomi. If I had paid the same as Meomi, I'd be singing a different tune. But the
#QPR is poor here.

You can tell a mile away that this is a Wagner family wine. There is the over extraction and sweet vanilla oak that dominates. I really thought with Pinot Noir things would be different. Now I'm thinking that they really only know how to make one style of wine and bending the grapes to fit the style. That, or they're just adding the Mega Purple to everything.

@Steve Bozich I can imagine it would be a challenge. I'm surprised she didn't use the pull tab

Freakshow The Strongest Man on Earth Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon

Rasberry and earthy on the nose with a sweeter, deep dark fruit finish. Acidity and fruit are well balanced. Love it. — 11 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

This wine needed about 3 hours to release. Initially tight with uncomfortable medicinal nose which then totally dissipated. Drinking now next day and you get the age of fully integrated but not fading tannins. Nose has a delightful dark fruit and smokiness. Great fit of nose and taste, meaning - when tastes after smelling the experience is consistent and not jolting. I think the color purple in a subdued way. Very nice. Memo to self: decant and watch for sediment, and enjoy three hours later. — 9 years ago

Domaine Auguste Clape

Cornas Syrah 2004

2004 vintage from Clape. Deep ruby hue. Violet and floral, very plummy - dark fruits. Hints of sweet spice, nutmeg and cardoman, smokey notes. On the palate, medium plus body, high acidity - integrated and refreshing. Medium plus, plush and ripe tannins. Long finish. The plums to the fore. Still quite primary and youthful. Should develop nicely over the next 15 years. Open in 2025. — 11 years ago
