2011 vintage. Decanted with some sed and tasted after 1 hour. Bigg structure with plenty of tobacco, underbrush and dark fruit. A complex kid. Lots of moving parts but really unified currently and moving towards a common goal. Total BDX ringer in a pricey blind. This has miles to go. 8.2.24. — 9 months ago
From a great looking bottle with a fill almost into the neck. Double decanted and left in the bottle for 5 hours before attacking it. Amber color. Good weight and haunting nose. Notes of old cedar, mocha, plums, cola, dark fruit, molasses and some sweet red cherry. Early on it’s all about the amazing nose. But with time the wine gains weight and you have a gorgeous old St Estephe in front of you. Still giving its all, and although the fruit is somewhat faded, this has complexity and structure that still drives the experience. And that nose is simply stunning. Great showing. — 3 years ago
Decanted 90 minutes. Very dark opaque colour. Nose with dark fruits, some black currant early on but some spices as well and some oak. Tasted blind the nose seems more CNP then Right Bank. Palate is dense, powerful, nice acidity in the middle, ripe fruit, volume and depth along with a delicious finish with a slight dryness. Very good but there is a little bit of warmth to it caused by alcohol that makes the whole balance very slightly out of sink with the rest. 90-91
90-91 — 5 years ago
1994 Screaming Eagle. Dinner w J&L B and D&M H while staying with D&M in Santa Ynez. Opened and waited about an hour. Decanted right before serving. Tons of jammy dark fruit. Opened more in the glass. JB mentioned full palate and balance. Great finish. Preferred this to ‘91 Dominus once this opened up. — 5 years ago
Take this with a grain of salt because at this point in the night my taste buds were a little scorched. Very fragrant red fruit on the nose. Initially this was still tremendously wound up. I wish we had opened it and decanted for longer as after two hours it was still slightly tight but the lovely fruit flavors persisted over cocoa and tobacco leaf undertones. All in, I wish I had let this rest for a few more years, but still drinking pretty well now. — 8 years ago
This took a loooong time to show up. Opened for 6 hours, then double decanted. Still needed two more hours to show its colors. Tannic monster with amazing black fruit. Bright acidity suggests 15+ years ahead of it. Bad ass wine! Tastes several other vintages at the winery last summer. This was by far the best. — 8 years ago
Loved the funk and ripe sweat on the nose, like that time I climbed the rope in gym class....I was expecting resolved tannins and a softer entry but this is quite closed up. This was not decanted so I'd definitely suggest air and a little agitation to wake it up. — 9 years ago
Double decanted. So smooth and so classic Bordeaux. Cigar box, purple fruit, integrated tannins and oak. Still drinking strong. — 9 months ago
Double decanted before service; enjoyed over a several hour period. The 1988 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and significant signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with dried dark fruit, tobacco, mocha, grilled meat, mushrooms, damp earth and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry. At this point, the tannins have integrated completely and are perceived as medium; acid is similar. Finish is medium. This leaned towards the more rustic, old school style of Bordeaux and I’m all for it. While this isn’t falling off a cliff, I would drink now. — 10 months ago
Our 10th anniversary wine. Excellent once decanted. — 4 years ago
Wine Nerd Herd virtual tasting. 86’Château Gruaud Larose.
12.5 ALC. Ruby in color with light amber edges. Decanted it for 90 minutes. Nose- 😳Ripe cherry, sweet spices, herb, tobacco. Dense, full- bodied. Plum, blackberries. With a long velvety tannins.Tasting great today. Without a doubt a 60 year wine. — 5 years ago
My first Latour and the tannins are still holding up.
Grilled bacon with layers of dark black/red fruits and earthy/floral undertones.
Decanted for 95 minutes. Can't wait to see how this opens up and changes with each glass.
Had with mushroom, green bean risotto. — 8 years ago
Big dark fruit up front, mixed berries and cherry notes, with a smooth silky finish. Decanted for two hours. — 10 years ago
1995 vintage. Light-medium body. Opened but not decanted. High neck fill. Solid cork. Relatively light sed. Tasted after one hour. Dusty with velveteen notes up front and a gradual thinning of intensity on the finish. As per the LR style, no explosive characteristics, only a seamless quality evident. This will hold in place for 7-8 years. 8.16.24. — 9 months ago
1989 vintage. Last tasted 3.28.24, 5.5.23, 4.4.23 and 12.9.22. Solid fill and cork. Recommended decanting but was denied. Mmkay. Eventually got clearance to decant after the bottle had been open for 1.25 hrs. Tasted after being open 5 mins, 45 mins and 2 hrs. Light-medium body throughout. Wine was funky and super tight initially. Had to talk a few of the “participants” down from their “this wine ain’t nothing” perch by telling them it needed at least an hour in the glass (since it hadn’t been decanted at that point). Wine threw expected sed on the decant. Started to loosen up at the 45 mins open stage and fairly exploded at the 2 hrs open (45 mins decanted) point. Dude that didn’t want to decant it gave me a wistful, regretful look at that point (since it blew the other 4 reds at the table away and was getting better) and it took waay too much willpower on my end not to say “Congrats on minimizing a fantastic wine experience, bro.” It wasn’t the best 1989 P-L specimen tasted semi-recently but feel this coulda delved into the 9.4 range without the unnecessary power trip from someone that didn’t even bring this wine to the shindig. Hopefully, this individual learned their lesson. 7.6.24. — 10 months ago
It was Father’s Day and I had decided on grilled rack of lamb for dinner so I selected this bottle of 2011 Chateau Musar rouge from our cellar. According to Musar’s records, the 2011 vintage was one of the most challenging since the early 1990’s. It was ultimately a late-maturing vintage with harvest taking place on October 13th, the latest since the 1983 vintage!
I decanted this bottle about eight hours prior to dinner. It should be noted that immediately upon opening, the bouquet was strikingly gorgeous with powerful aromatics that were obvious from several feet away and this trait carried through until dinner time.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet color. Slightly turbid with a near opaque core. On the nose, black plums, blackberries, cassis, tobacco, organic earth, exotic spices, leather, spiced meat, and pomegranate. I detect a touch of VA as well. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the nose with an added bit of red rope licorice. Lovely, long, savory…amazing. This was a brilliant compliment to the lamb (which was served with beets and goat cheese and fattoush) and everything I wanted in a Musar tonight. Drinking well now with a hefty decant and I expect well cellared examples to drink well past 2035. — 2 years ago
Still a young baby decanted 3hrs. — 4 years ago
Rich, without being heavy; elegant and balanced; darker fruits with a wonderful finish; decanted 90 minutes and continued to improve through the evening — 6 years ago
Decanted for 3 hours and perfection! — 8 years ago
1990 Chateau Cheval Blanc bordeaux. Bordeaux course during K charity wine dinner, alongside the '90 Rothschild. Another tough comp! We decanted both wines for just over an hour by the time it was served. Both wines opened up a lot more while sitting in the glass. This wine had a complexity, which was slightly more intriguing to me. Ripe red fruit and currant on the front, earth, leather, and super soft tannins. I really loved this wine, though the table was split on their preferences. Note to perhaps consider decanting this wine for slightly longer next time? — 8 years ago
My guest brought this in from there wine cell. I decanted the wine let it say for about 1 hour. I used a Osso to open this bad boy up, I didn't wanna break the cork. The cork came out smooth and beautiful. As for the wine, my guest gave me a lil taste and it was magnificent!! Smooth tannis bright fruit just awesome!! — 10 years ago
Still young, tannins not fully resolved. Decanted it too. Is leave it alone another 5 years. — 10 years ago
