Silky, spicy, texturally perfect. Tyson makes some of the best wine in Oregon, including a Pinot and Chardonnay from this site. Four winds is a horse farm, 8 miles northwest of McMinnville, about 6 acres of fruit (?), marine-sedimentary, dense on the palate, acid, fresh. Pretty much perfect. This wine is why you drink Pinot with pork and salmon. Going to be really good in 2020-2021, maybe longer — 9 years ago

Kept it in the cellar for longer than it probably needed but it's held it's own. Nose and taste is of tangerine, grapefruit, honey, and under ripe green pear. The palate confirms the honey, bit of caramel and pink lady apple. Body is light to medium bodied, surprisingly on the sweeter side for a Shiraz rosé with enough acidity to cleanse the palate. Short refreshing length to keep you asking for more. — 8 years ago

Moderate reddish purple in color. Nose of sweet red cherries, vanilla, and subtle notes of earth as it opens up. Ripe cherry and raspberry fruit on the palate with baking spices. While not particularly complex, it is very balanced and approachable. Named for the sound of the Monterrey Bay winds through the winery's vineyards. — 9 years ago

LONGING FOR THE SOUTH

Yesterday I drank this very nice Macedonian semi-dry T'ga za Jug red wine.

The wine is made of the native grape variety Vranec. It has an intense red color, and the distinctive taste of raisins and raspberries, which make it a nice sweet treat (hence: semi-dry).

The wine is named after the poem ‘Taga za Yug’ of the Bulgarian poet Konstantin Miladinov (1830–1862), one of the Miladinov brothers, who originate from Ottoman Macedonia. Both brothers are thought to have laid the foundation of the Macedonian literary tradition.

‘Taga za Yug’ means ‘longing for the South’ (el anhelo por el Sur): "If I had an eagle's wings, I would rise and fly on them to our shores, to our own parts [...] Here are frost and snow and ashes, blizzards and harsh winds abound [...] There the sunrise warms the soul".

When it is cold outside, and fiercely raining, I can assure you that it makes you long for the sun that warms the soul. Drinking the T'ga za Jug wine in good company and nice surroundings makes for a wonderful or sometimes even better alternative.

Damn you Tim Vandergrift, giving me highly hopped beers I am forced to love. Hoppy IPA nose if you're not paying careful attention. Systemic desensitization brings out pineapple and coriander, pine and orange blossom/terpene. Probably the third best IPA I've ever had. Good luck finding it, hand carried from BC. — 9 years ago

Beautiful and intriguing wine from off the coast of France, below Muscadet, where the vines grow mere inches off the ground from the brutal winds, and the soil is all schist rock.  Dark cherries, tons of mineral notes, and also some wild game. Extremely taut acidity.  — 10 years ago
