This Chianti Classico from Mazzei is 90% Sangiovese from 4 different clones and 10% Malvasia Nera and Merlot. This lovely example spent 12 months in small oak barrels, just enough to give it a slight oaky feel in the mouth. Dark cherry, white pepper, lots of acid and a little earthiness deliver the classic Chianti flavours. The wine is well balanced, full bodied and has a pleasing finish. This will easily last another 10 years. The Mazzei family have been making wine at Castello di Fonterutoli in Tuscany since 1435. Impressive!

Purchased at the Castello in 2013. Raisins and leather that opened up beautifully over about 2 hours. Loads of fruit still here. Very tasty juice. — 6 years ago

Benedetta knows how to make a great wine. This comes from a tiny family owned estate on the east side of the hill in Montalcino. Benedetta's father worked these vines for years before he saved up to buy them. They only make 13,000 bottles / year I believe. Think of their Super Tuscan starter /first course wine, the Rossi as the brother, and their Brunello as the "dad". Buy this bottle. — 7 years ago

Very fruit forward with black cherry & some blueberry, a touch of sundries tomatoes and well integrated wood (used French large tonneaux). Nice balance and polished tannins, the 2015 is highly drinkable — 6 years ago
