My wife is a kindergarten teacher, so we both understand the importance of a little alcohol at the end of the day! With it being Valentine's Day, we figured this bottle from O'Brien, a favorite of ours, fit the day well! They are a sight for sore eyes when surrounded by big Napa fruit bomb cabs. These are beautiful Bordeaux style wines that accentuate restrained fruit but also a great blend of funky earth and spice. (And JRae's cookies in town has the best sugar cookies around...we'll enjoy one or two before drinking as this wine needs at least an hour decant before it opens...not a pop'n'pour style). — 8 years ago

It's a warm, sunny, beautiful day here in TX, and this is the perfect way to finish off lunch. I got to go through Cobden Wini wines my last visit out to Napa as the winemaker, @Mark Davis , is also out of O'Brien Estate. They have a Marsanne/Roussanne blend, a very nice Pinot noir, and this excellent late harvest Sauv Blanc. Talk about aromatics! Bursting out of the glass with honeysuckle, white flowers and kiwi. Great viscosity and texture on the palate that coats it with honey, vanilla, and a hint of orange. — 8 years ago

Deep purplish red. Lovely nose full of coconut, vanilla extract, blueberries, blue flowers and holiday spices. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) with a rounded medium to medium plus body. Dry on the palate with some black fruits, dark cocoa, spices, and sweet spices too. Youthful and medium to medium plus finish. Drink till 2021. — 7 years ago

Steve Distler, owner of Arnyca, is doing consulting for a few small labels out in Napa. As I've posted before, his Arnyca cab franc is my favorite out of Napa Valley. He was the former GM at O'Brien Estate and was able to add them to his portfolio, along with Cobden Wini (winemaker for Arnyca and winemaker at O'Brien), Frias Family and Jack Winery. Killer line-up of small production stuff. We hosted him for a wine dinner and all of it was stellar.

Jack Winery utilizes the talents of Aonair winemaker Grant Long Jr. Jack was started by Vernon Wells (former MLB player) and Chris Ianetta (current MLB player). This '14 cab is from Diamond mountain and drinking well at a young age. Not as monstrous as young Howell Mountain cabs. Red and black fruit dominant with a decent amount of espresso and pepper. Needs to rest for a few years but has very good potential to be extremely good. — 8 years ago
