The deep and effusive nose opens with bright cheery (more red than black), plum, cedar, followed by licorice, light espresso, and hint of lavender and fresh herb. Taste is on the riper and darker side with lightly stewed black fruits, fig, caramel, and touch of smoke. The plush and somewhat port like palate is countered with round but racy acidity.
From magnum. It feels wasteful to drink this cab at such a young age, but who am I to complain! — 6 years ago
Wonderfully refreshing on a hot summer afternoon. — 7 years ago
So much salinity and complexity on the nose. Super mineral with a little texture on the palate. Really really pretty wine especially for the cost! — 9 years ago
I will miss this bottle it was fantastic — 10 years ago
I'm not normally swayed by beautiful bottles...but on top of being a really beautiful rose, this was also a really beautiful bottle. Just a hint of sweetness peeking through the dry. Another crowd pleaser. — 10 years ago

I prefer Krug by far for the money but nice. — 12 years ago
A classic. 100% Viura from the Zaconia vineyard, located right outside López de Heredia’s winery in Haro. Fermented in ancient oak vats with indigenous yeasts and aged in used barrels for four years, followed by another 6 years in bottle. Complex nose with oxidative notes. Chamomile, flowers, beeswax, lemon curd. Austere on the mouth, with great acidity and freshness. Long, subtly salty finish. Amazing — 5 years ago
Tasted blind. Reddish tawny. Nose is closed and not yielding much. I get cranberries, some cherries, iron and stones, some wood. Has a high pitched character to it. Has some pucker in it yet. Tight with ample acidity. I guess 97 Vogue Bonnes Mares. In my experience this wine has had some variations in its performance. Today it was better than most, but suffered by not getting ample air before it was served. — 5 years ago

Visiting again this splendid Paulliac from the 2011 vintage. 2011 vintage was labeled as mediocre in Bordeaux and this lovely wine showed that it is actually a classic vintage with some great wines, so trust the chateau not only the vintage. The nose is tempting with notes if coffee, earth, oak, cassis, black fruits and hints of chocolate, the body is full with round tannins, acidity is splendid and finish is long. My score 92, drink to 2026, perhaps longer — 7 years ago

This was dynamite for the price. Needed some time to open up but after about 2 hours in a decanter, it sang. Rich texture reminiscent of some of Von Niepperg's higher end estates. What I loved most was the absolute seamless and perfect integration of oak on this bottle. Rarely have I been as pleased with the oaking regiment of a wine as I was with this wine. Perfectly sweet oak and vanilla coming through without being too prevalent. A beauty of a bottle for $25. — 9 years ago
Went great with food, tannic by itself. — 10 years ago
Beaucastel is by far my favorite chateauneuf, killed this one a little young but was still a very rich and bold but nicely balanced Bordeaux. Dark cherry and dark chocolatey notes. — 10 years ago

Tawny with amber rims and nearly opaque. Old Bordeaux nose with some funk on it. Notes of black cherry, spice, old wood, cut cigar and some barnyard floor. Fruit still present and part of the equation with tannins mostly faded. The barnyard notes seems to be brett to me as it becomes a bit more pronounced over the evening (but I’m not as affected by it as some). I liked this more than others. — 5 years ago

Some nice oxidative appley aromas. Palate is deep and hits the right notes. Well made, if not much verve.
After being spoiled by great grower champagne all through quarantine, it’s actually surprising to try a bottle of big house bubbles I used to love and find it enjoyable but kinda boring. — 6 years ago

What a color! I’ve been fortunate to have an ‘87 and ‘88 (a bottle from my cellar three months ago) and both were knockouts. Color here could be confused for a 10-12yr old wine. Incredibly dark and pure in the glass! Licorice, cassis, and some tobacco on the nose. As it opened, more tobacco leaf type notes came through. No signs of decline after 1hr+ of being open. Reinforced my thought of only enjoying Montelena Wines after 15+yrs. What a pull by @Mark Flesher ! — 7 years ago

May 10, 2016. Lunch wine, day 2 l'Ecole du Vin. 70% merlot, 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, & Petit Verdot. Well balanced lovely — 10 years ago
Now we're talking! A vintage lost by following the monumental 1971. This was truly spectacular and one of the most complete wines, not just Burgundy, I've had in awhile. Amazing length, gobs of wet earth and crushed ripe raspberries and black cherries, and that wonderful hint of salinity you get as you swirl the wine across your tongue. — 10 years ago
Fruity, nice and dry. — 11 years ago
1994. Aged well. Beautifully balanced. Was surprised by how good this tasted on the palette. Highly recommended. — 11 years ago
