This past Saturday I attended a get together with close friends. We opened the 2014 Saarloos & Sons Family Tree Rhone Blend. 55% Grenache, 27% Mourvedre and 18% Syrah. This was the hit of the evening that turned heads and got people talking.
The nose was light with cherry, raspberry, plum, cinnamon, black pepper, anise, roses and an earthy gravel.
On the palate was beautiful fruit of black cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, anise , clove and a good gravel component.
The wine was soft velvety smooth with a medium mouth feel and medium to plus acidity with medium smooth tannin that leads to a medium long finish. A very enjoyable wine. Almost the weekend please be safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 7 years ago

Very nice last two of this vintage but many fond memories with this great blend — 9 years ago
Well priced for 12 yr, smooth, medium oak, not peaty, given as a wedding gift. Goes great with nuptials. — 10 years ago
Re-tasted and showing true NZ SB characters- bright and zippy — 10 years ago
Modern in style but quite enjoyable. Oak is noticeable but not intrusive. Lots of fruit still present with slight sweetness on the midpalate and lively tannins on a bone dry finish. Decanted for two hours as tannins are still fairly aggressive otherwise. It is advisable. — 10 years ago

I have opened tonight the 2012 Saarloos & Sons Family Tree, a blend of 40% Grenace Noir, 30% Stray and 30% Mourvedre. Keith Saarloos and family do a wonderful job in making their wines.
On the nose there is blackberry, black cherry, strawberry, plum, vanilla, pepper, floral notes of violet, gravel and sweet oak.
Th palate reveals notes of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, strawberry, licorice, vanilla, chocolate, white pepper and oak.
This wine has a full soft mouth feel with medium acidity, medium smooth tannins that lead to a medium long finish. An enjoyable wine to have alone or with others. Have a great week this week and please be healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 8 years ago
The more restrained wine from this producer. Has a touch more length and intensity than the Romulus. — 9 years ago

Deep baked dark fruit on the nose. Bloody and jammy in the mouth with lots of garrigue and afternotes of charred meat. A bit of green olive. — 9 years ago
Nice round taste but quite a heavy wine. — 10 years ago

Nice. Not a lot of body, but worth the price. — 12 years ago
The winner of the Downs Club Premium Red taste off from 41 masked Reds. Not my final choice but democracy prevailed by 4 votes to 3. This was in my final 3. A nice balance of sweet red fruits with some spice and hint of pepper. Balanced and smooth. Will cellar up to 10 years but overall a little too sweet for my palate.
