Podere Poggio Scalette

Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGT Sangiovese 2012

Such an intense inviting nose and sexy opulent palate. I’ve been on a roll lately with excellent Sangiovese based wines (this is 100%), but this ranks high across the board, and still not close to fully mature. Herbs and spices, leather, ripe rich red fruits, silky tannins, buoyant acidity. Nothing NOT to like here, especially when paired with a pork osso bucco. — 7 years ago

Best ever from here; just stunning. Structured and built to age, it also caresses the palate with Marco's telltale seductiveness. Costs barely anything; beats most. Great combo. — 8 years ago

Poggio il Castellare

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

Lots of sour cherries and tar on the nose. The palate is sour cherries, plums, tobacco and some smokiness. — 9 years ago

Castello di Monsanto

Il Poggio Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 1980

A real treat to see a 34 year old Italian beauty. Dried herb and fruit. Earthy, dark dried fruits. Soft soft tannin with rounded acid. Lost its vibrancy and that bang that sucks you in. Admirable it has held up and a beautiful experience. 89 points. — 10 years ago

Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2011

This is amazing juice. Sexy, opulent, tons of energy and verve. And still a baby in its development - the house style focuses on early drinkability. But with no corners cut on balance or depth. Paired with some incredible venison medallions, this put me on nuvola nove. 😁 — 8 years ago

I drank this after using an aerator. Immediately scent of braised beef and fresh rubber on the nose. Meaty flavor on the way down. Truly is best wine under $5 at TJ's — 8 years ago

Ca' del Grifone

1967 Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2009

Cheap and cheerful Italian red from Trader Joes. A blend that's primarily Sangiovese, it's pretty subtle and doesn't leave that powerful red tang on the finish. Slightly dry, certainly not complex, but quaffable. — 12 years ago

2007 vintage, from our trip over there in 2013! A nice bottle to enjoy today with a little pasta and gravy 😊 Mikey! Nice nose on the open, a little lighter in color, bur tasting plenty yummy! Should only get better as it opens up. — 8 years ago

Ca' La Bionda

Casal Vegri Valpolicella Classico Superiore Corvina Blend 2012

Graceful cherry and raspberry fruit as it opens up. Medium bodied with a dash of woody tannins in finish. A little bit of black tea. Loamy and savory in nose but brighter fruit expression on palate. This like Reggie Bush, not producing a lot on the field but seductive off it. — 10 years ago
