Sierra Foothills Cabernet Franc 2013

Hands down the best Cab Franc I've tasted all year in California. This was spectacular. Last vintage by this winemaker. Mark Herold takes the reigns next vintage and I'm sure he will make a mess of this. — 7 years ago

I was floored that it came from Sierra Foothills. I haven't seen it anywhere, but I tasted this at the Pioneer Company Portfolio tasting. The owner told me Mark Herold is taking over production, im not a fan of his winemaking style

Flux Madder Lake Vineyard Grenache

Nice, young grenache. Tannic but approachable. This will soften with age, but I'm not sure that's a positive. It's drinking well now, and I'll admit I enjoy the faint heat on the finish. — 8 years ago

Flux Terra Alta Vineyard Grenache 2012

This is the 100% grenache, not the 85% grenache with some syrah, etc. The color is inexplicably light, not rosé, but literally closer to that color than a young, dense syrah. The color belies a thicker body and mouth feel, nice tannins. Drinking well. Solid effort. — 8 years ago

Merus

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Black & blue fruits, spice and graphite. Big, rich and dense wine with a tannic structure that should have been decanted as this could use more time to open. Well made wine from Mark Herold — 9 years ago

Chaffey Bros

Düfte Punkt Gewürztraminer Blend 2014

For a white, extremely tasty. Nice and spicy from the Gewürztraminer, nice acidity from the Riesling and good amount of body from the Weiber Herold. Different but really pleasurable different. — 9 years ago

Loved it. But I have a bias. Everything Mark Herold is pretty awesome in my opinion. Would be a ten if it hung on the tongue a bit longer. Pair it with red meat (brilliant insight) — 9 years ago

Stiftskellerei Neustift Kerner 2014

9.0

It's Kerner so it's aromatic. But there is also a nice minerality to this wine. Aged 'sur lie' for six minths. A joy to drink. Note to self: Kerner is a crossing between Trollinger and Riesling. Crossed by researcher August Herold. So why is it called Kerner? It is named after 19th century German poet Justinus Kerner, who -apparently- wrote a lot about wine. — 8 years ago

Great conclusion! Next time try to find the Praepositus from the same winery. Said to be the best Kerner .

Naming of new German vine crosses, interesting topic. My favourite aromatic one, Scheurebe is named after it's producer. It used to be called Dr Wagner Rebe after a certain Dr Wagner who was a medium highly ranked nazi involved in agriculture, whereas in Austria it is called Sämling 88, seedling 88...

Kobalt

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

Second vintage from Kevin Carriker (I think Mark Herold was still involved at this time). Absolutely terrific. It's clear that Kevin's wines need a lot of time in bottle. Had this one several years ago and there is NO comparison. Surprised how much primary fruit one still gets on the nose, but the palate is classic, moderately aged CA cab. Beautifully sweet, integrated tannins. Great balance, with a silky finish. Unfortunately this is our last bottle, but it probably has a few more years left (but don't wait: it's drinking perfectly now!). — 7 years ago

Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Greg Ballington
9.2

Very interesting wine from up on Diamond Mountain, showing the classic elements of a cold, wet vintage. Dark, inky ruby red with garnet edges. Some funkiness on the nose, cigar box, barnyard, wet tobacco leaves and some truffles. Definitely seems older than it is. Very complex and layered palate with dark stewed berries, cassis, damp wood, tobacco leaves, and some damp earthiness. Some light greenery and plums in the long and lingering finish. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Some bright acidity in the mid palate alongside a creamy and extracted texture. Definitely needs some time to open up and show the layers and complexity. Reminds us of the 2011 Brown Label by Mark Herold. Drink till 2023. — 8 years ago
