Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in Napa, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on 8 estate vineyards. Aromas of dried berry fruits and spice. On the palate of predominately Cab Sauvignon which sat in oak for 18 months, flavors of ripe berry, cacao and smoky nuts, firm sweet tannins on lingering finish ending soft. Will age well. — 8 years ago

The longer it sat the better the wine tasted. Orange golden color, fine bubbles. A slight hint of dried fruit an pears. Still the strong Chardonnay taste is big. — 9 years ago

Complex with three distinct flavor stages. Solid fruit out front with a quick round balance then a smooth lingering finish. Sat by fireside mid August. Lovely — 9 years ago

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Better than expected. The wine of the night, even up against a few classics. Deeply brooding and masculine, loads of dark fruits, eucalyptus, smoke, earth, and tight, dusty berries. The layers keep appearing over time. The more this sat, the better it showed. THIS is why I love SLD. Bravo, Elias Fernadez. — 10 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Wow, what a great wine! Decanted for 2 hrs and was very impressed by this wine. All descriptions I have read on this wine are accurate. Fruity, slightly dry, just the right tannins, smooth going down and just lingers on the tongue. Another wine that got better the longer it sat. Enjoyed drinking this wine as we entertained our friends. A definite recommend and a definite rebuy. Enjoy — 10 years ago

If lovage grew at the feet of groves of tangerines and we sat beneath these quenching our thirst eating balled watermelon dressed in lime zest and spearmint. Organic to boot! Among my very favorite rosés to date in 2015. An absolute delight tasted on a Flower Day. — 10 years ago

Only the second time I’ve sat down today since 9a. Big event at the house next weekend in our backyard. Gotta have it ready. Ahhh, so good to sit down and sip BSR now. The driving force to finish out the day out strong.

Lean light red fruit and that soft, razor sharp, grippy chalkiness. 😋

If i had this blind, i wouldn't have guessed it was just bordeaux varietals. At least on opening.

Ya it might come off as manipulated, but the more it sat in my glass the more i was appreciating it. At that price point its hard for me not to get a mike smith, kirk venge cab or get a really nice single vineyard zin from a top zin producer.

Wax on, wax off: this evening I took a rare field-trip to Waxhaw, which is way beyond my typical radius of existence. I had planned an anniversary dinner at Heritage, and my good friend "Coach Witty" encouraged me to run a mile race with her at track night in those parts beforehand (why not run a 5min race right before a nice dinner?!) I ended up winning and getting a PR, and Heritage was worth the trek. Food Babe walked in and sat down next to us - hopefully she only had good things to say about Paul Verica's passion project, as I loved it!! As for the wine...I have been asked, "what's a good wine to give as a nice gift?"....and I often suggest Caymus cab. It's always solid, a fruit bomb, and elegantly-finished. A known quantity. Perfectly paired with the local summer vegetables and my steak. And last but not least, let's all raise a glass to Pat Summit - the winningest coach in D1 history to date - that certainly gains my respect. May her legacy live on #caymus #theextramile — 9 years ago

Fanti

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

This Fanti is welcome, denser, more opaque in the glass, fuller bodied that any of the others. I had one class and then it sat for 18 hours and didn't fade a notch and the time added an extra dimension.

It has the characteristic herb nose of 2010, it's like standing in a garden, a fresh wind is carrying herbs and strawberry, growing nearby are cherries.

The fuller palate also has cherries and red fruit, perfect tannin led integration, great balance, superb mouth feel.

Damn these 2010's are good!

Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2013

Continuing to work my way through wines I don’t drink a lot I could be tested on. I’m rather fond of this one and it’s an exemplary standard Chianti Classico: tart red fruit, tomato, something sanguine and a full yet well-knitted backbone of tannins and acid to ballast all. Images of pizza are now dancing in my head. Thank god this wine was easier to comprehend than The Shape of Water. Jut sat through my screener of that and have no idea what to make of it. With this wine I just know I should drink it. But also maybe make pizza. — 8 years ago

@MaJ CappS yeah I ended up some healthy veggies and lentil soup—not nearly as fun as pizza although lentils seem to go okay with Sangiovese too😊

Patz & Hall

Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2014

Found another '14 bottle, continuing to develop nicely. Bright straw yellow with aromas of fresh fruit, stone fruits and citrus with floral notes. On the palate, complex flavors, full and rich with peach, green apple, mango and vanilla spice. The wine had a soft mineral taste with nutty toasty oak, noting that the wine sat on French oak, (40% new). The finish was smooth with great texture and balance, time in the cellar will add benefit, an outstanding offering from Patz & Hall. — 8 years ago

Sió Blanc 2015

Light, crisp nose with notes of white flowers, Asian pear, limes and a touch of salt. Zesty, light and airy on the palate. Lemon, lime and crunchy pear flavors lead to big, crisp acidity and a nice edge of slate. The finish lingers indefinitely with brisk acidity and just a touch of creaminess. — 9 years ago

Out of a #magnum The nose and length were really impressive. The nose was very intense and complex and the wine sat and developed on the palate for at least 4 min. The palate was a little beyond where I thought it should be and the tannins were a little disjointed though. The black and red fruit was very ripe. The balance was slightly off but still a wonderful wine. #pauillac #bordeaux #moutonrothschild #premiergrandcru — 10 years ago

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Another find on Last Bottle. Very bold and earthy. Not sharp but a strong finish. Tons of flavor. Sat in decanter for about an hour and that seemed sufficient. Serve at 63 degrees, a few below room temperature to keep the alcohol at bay and the aroma really comes through. — 10 years ago

Light and citrus nose with hints of farm. Grapefruit, mineral and licorice. I wish I could have sat all afternoon with this amazing gem. Probably the top five best white wines I have had.
