Bartolo Mazzi

Giuseppe Rinaldi

Rosae Langhe DOC Ruché 2018

Darker colour than the 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo tried earlier in the week. A little more rustic and less expressive on the palate but remains true to Piedemont with rose and cherry flavours and appealing texture. New grape variety for me which is interesting. Lower price point so accessible entry to the Rinaldi style which I’m currently thinking is similar to Bartolo but a less little less savoury. — 4 years ago

Bartolo

Merlot Blend 2013

Dark fruit with floral notes. Pronounced yet well integrated tannins, just enough acidity to keep it fresh. Hardly any sediment, no need to decant. Just beginning to show its age. Winemaker’s notes: Bartolo 2013 Merlot. Produced from the grapes in the Mann vineyard, Gilroy, California. Merlot 79%, Petit Verdot 21%. Barrel-aged for 20 months in two-year-old American oak. — 5 years ago

Bertani

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2000

A good vintage for the whole region, best displayed in a glass, unlike Mazzi. The bouquet clearly indicates that this wine could have become Recioto someday 😄. Compared to other samples, the aroma is more fruity. There is no spice in taste, but in this case such circumstances cannot be considered a disadvantage. Long time in oakis felt but not dominant due to the traditional approach to Amarone production. There are some cherry, chocolate, oak, brown sugar, black licorice. — 5 years ago

Naoussa Xinomavro 2015

First time trying Xinomavro from Naoussa, aka “the Bartolo of Greece.” Juicy dark fruit & sweet spice aromas are so inviting. High tannins, but it’s relatively lean w/ sour cherry, herbaceous flavors w/ a hint of leather. Highly recommended. — 7 years ago

Dolcetto d'Alba 2018

Nice saturated red, fairly transparent. This is a among the best dolcetto I’ve tried, just behind Bartolo. Lovely texture, nothing forced and nicely in balance. 12.5% abv so nicely moderate. Touch of bramble and a slightly spicey grip at the back end. — 4 years ago

Bartolo

Petit Verdot Merlot 2012

Starting to show tertiary aromas. Very robust tannins still, good acidity. Very coarse sediment, no need to decant. Winemaker’s notes: A rare variety in both Bordeaux and California, Petit Verdot produces rich, dense wines with aromas of cassis and intense flavors of ripe blackberry. Grown in the Mann vineyard in Gilroy California. Petit Verdot 87%, Merlot 13% barrel-aged for 30 months in three-year-old American oak. — 5 years ago

Bone Ash Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Follow up wine to our 07 Bartolo Mascarello on Friday night. Vacuum sealed and re-stored enough to write notes today as we had friends for dinner.

The nose reveals, floral, slightly creamy, candied with hints of stewed fruits; blackberries, blueberries, black plum, dark cherries, plum, boysenberries and dark cherries. There is a little smoke here but, if they named this wine and vineyard because their is ash on the nose and palate, it wouldn’t surprise me. Soft volcanic minerals, some anise, dark rich, turned earth, vanilla, cinnamon, hints if clove, dark spice, limestone, sweet tarriness, used leather, wood shavings, light peppery notes, light mintiness with dark red, fresh & withering dark floral and violets.

The body is full. The tannins are soft, round and velvety. The structure, tension, length and balance have hit a high point but, there is 8-10 years of life ahead. ripe; blackberries, blueberries, black plum, dark cherries, plum, boysenberries and dark cherries. Some smoke, cigar ash, soft volcanic minerals, some anise, dark rich, turned earth, vanilla, cinnamon, hints of clove, very dark spice with palate heat, limestone, dry crushed rocks, dry top soil, sweet tarriness, used leather, wood shavings, light peppery notes, light mintiness with dark red, fresh & withering dark floral and violets. The acidity is round and beautiful. The finish is rich, lush, ripe, well balanced and persists a very longtime.

Photos of, The Venge with Estate vines, inside their tasting room, Winemaker-Owner Kirk Venge and their Bone Ash Vineyard in late Winter or for us in CA, more like Springtime on a non rainy day.

Cannubi Barolo Nebbiolo 1958

1958 vintage. From Jay. 1958 Bartolo Mascarello - Brief Note from Galloni Historical Retrospective Held in London April 26, 2016. From 1.9L format. Very light rose colour. Typical nose of crushed roses and violets mixed with ancient saddle leather and a hint of very old crushed mint. The wine still posses good fruit although it is clearly in the twilight of its life. Some medicinal elements on the palette but these are enjoyable and well integrated. Otherwise the palette is both ethereal and elegant. It has both poise and elegance and remains a gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo despite its maturity. Fraises sauvages, raspberries, and hints of slightly unripened pomegranate blend together seamlessly. The finish is smooth with medium length. I have been fortunate enough to have this wine on three separate occasions in the last twelve months and my notes have been consistent. 96/100. Drink Now. — 9 years ago

Is there a better way to complete a night of Barolo than with Chinato? I’ve never even seen a bottle of Bartolo Mascarello’s special elixir and yet, here it is. It’s like a blast of baked fruits, alpine herbs, mint, and holiday spice. A brilliant finish. — 4 years ago

Rocche di Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

I thought the 2010 Bartolo was great but maybe this was even better- wow. I wasn’t expecting this to be so accessible. It was rich and chewy- not in a Cali cab manner- just lingered in the mid palate. Add in some dark fruit, mineral, licorice all woven together beautifully. The wine was so light. Really impressed with these wines. Memo to me later- go buy some!! — 7 years ago

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello

Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 1958

1958 Cantina Mascarello Barolo Riserva: from Jay. Washed out ruby/cranberry juice in color but with both sparkle and intensity. The light color of the wine is quite translucent allowing both candlelight and ambient lighting at the table to give it a lift as it glitters. Very delicate on the nose. There is a little cork taint but as this wine is so beautifully perfumed it is relatively easy to look past this imperfection. Violets, crushed roses, and red forest fruits scintillate the olfactory senses. This is really quite lovely. On the palette the wine is both ethereal and elegant. It has poise and balance and although it is in its latter years it remains a gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo. Fraises sauvages, raspberries, and hints of slightly unripened pomegranate blend together seamlessly. The finish is both long and determined. A very sophisticated and classy wine with a glint in its eye...think St. Moritz in the '60s. Drink now. 95/100.
