Dark black cherry and a touch of white pepper to go w a slight vegetal green pepper that dissipated as the wine opened. Tons of wood notes—could literally taste the barrel it was aged in. Nice acidity and light smooth tannins. A beautiful wine thats coming into its drinking window now! — 5 years ago

Ghemme Nebbiolo 1980

Rewind almost 40 years. This wine is still strong. The structure is fading but the palate is there. Secondary notes but oh so layered. Not a great year in Piemonte but this showed up. — 5 years ago

'L Ciaciaret' Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2013

Actually, 9.2 understates how good this wine was. Complementing a lovely menu, after a stern wine steward had demanded we let it breathe for 45 minutes, we had a wonderful experience. The wine, which had a tannic bite when we tasted an earlier sample, smoothly showed plum, cherry, and just a bit of minerality. We will remember this meal for a long time! — 7 years ago

LXXIV Antichi Vini Pugliesi Primitivo di Manduria

This is an amazing wine and it is one of my favorite ones to bring to dinners. It is robust tannic fairly big and opens very quickly. As a cousin to the zinfandel it shows as it is extremely drinkable despite it's large tannic quality. Elements of black fruit and pepper remind me of both the zinfandel and the Shiraz. Anyone familiar Shirah from the Rhone Valley should definitely give this one a try. The only thing I will say is that I enjoy it with friends and less you can finish the bottle by yourself. It dies fairly quickly. — 8 years ago

Wow. A random choice off a list. Very delicate colour, looks like a lightweight wine. Perfect balance of fruit acidity and decent weight too. Not much tannin. No idea what it is but it's excellent.

Ethereal Ghemme that comes pretty close to rivaling Rovellotti and Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo, who for me are the benchmarks. Vivid and fleshy red fruit, with black truffle poking its head out behind. Ever changing in the glass. I would happily forgo drinking this and simply smell it all night. — 8 years ago
