Hohen-Sülzen Riesling 2018

Lyle Fass
9.3

Considering how stunning Frauenberg was in 2018 I was even excited to taste this and it did not let down. Stunning nose. Vinous Crabtree and Evelyn. Floral, herbal, lavender, gorgeous. Honeysuckle. Lean and limey as well. Hint of vulcanized rubber I love so much. Apricot, peach skin. So insanely complex. A GG like nose. Complex and concentrated with terrific fruit skin purity and almost a like fruit leather. So mineral and precise and just teeming with energy and a playful, focused yet intense juiciness. The finish is a mile long and gives off citrus and minerals. Amazing texture and so well made. Balanced and super pure with the structure to age for 10+ years. As this airs it picks up a white chocolate, caramel hit in the mid palate which is to die for. — 6 years ago

Trine Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

The 2015 Trine is 40% CF, 28% CS, 18% Merlot, 10% Malbec and 4% PV. Blackcurrents, white pepper, licorice. Unfolds and sustains nicely through the finish, though ends with a touch of dryness. — 8 years ago

Rivers-Marie

Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The 2016 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard lasted 10 days before I finally gave in. My weakness was rooted more in curiosity than hedonism. Albeit much of that curiosity had to do with how hedonistic it was. After 30 minutes I was concerned that I might have killed a baby. After 45 mins it turned on a dime, and after another 30 minutes it came into focus and you realize all’s right with the world. There’s a seamless swath of minerality and savoriness that spans from wet gravel to dark chocolate cocoa powder while also revealing a bridge of cedar, cassis, underbrush, grilled meat, and espresso. Once again, this makes an excellent argument for being my favorite wine in the valley. — 8 years ago

Bought a couple of these too, plus some of the new Herb Lamb, have you tried that yet?

@Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher Bum I have not tasted the Herb Lamb yet, but considering the pedigree of both the Colgin and HL offerings from that vineyard, it’s hard to imagine Thomas isn’t doing something awesome there too! Looking forward to your review.

Leonetti Cellar

Columbia Valley Merlot 2006

This wine has rounded out since being released in 2008. The grapes were chosen from the Seven Hills, Loess, Mill Creek, Upland. Pepper Bridge, as well as Bacchus-Dionysus and Wallula, both located in the Columbia Valley. It is a blend of 76% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot, having the highest percentage of Carmenere that I have seen for this wine. This vintage was characterized by an early bud break and a hot summer which led to ripe fruit. The wine opens with aromas of milk chocolate, Turkish coffee, sagebrush and black cherry. This leads to rich flavors of black cherry, anise, sage, blackberry and mocha. There is a silky mouthfeel and wonderful viscosity, despite the wine being nearly 10 years old. This is drinking beautifully, one of the best of its kind. 2,723 cases of this delicious wine made. Drink 2019-2035- 96 — 7 years ago

Flat Rock Cellars

The Rusty Shed Twenty Mile Bench VQA Chardonnay 2006

The 2006 Rusty Shed Chardonnay is a blend of four blocks of Chardonnay on the Flat Rock Property. Grapes are hand picked and hand sorted before whole bunch pressing takes place. It was then cold settled in stainless steel, 100% barrel fermented and left on the lees for 10 months. Wild and commercial yeasts were used for primary fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. The result?
Beautiful example of a mid to full bodied Chardonnay with butter, vanilla, apples and light spice on the palate. A lot of flavour and elegance at this price point. Sampled this 2006 in 2017 but this should sit well and perhaps develop more for a few more years. Best part? It's from Niagara! Loved it!

Lambert Bridge

Sonoma County Merlot 2006

Dare say this was way better than the last bottle I had about 2 or 3 years ago. This was kind of a forgotten gem in the cellar that I found last Friday. A little vegetal from cork pop had me worried but this wine blew off in 20 minutes and showed great terroir and classic aged foresty black notes emerged. Lots of body was here and very ample fruit. Finish showed completely resolute tannin. Very silky finish. Great with olive and mushroom marinara. Probably slightly in decline at this point. It quite a delight tonight at 10 years old. — 9 years ago

Troll Bridge

Password Napa Valley Red Blend 2009

Troll Bridge Password red blend, 2009. Bottle number 218 of 900.

Deep ruby color with a nice, slighter ruby rim. The tears fall nicely on this blend. On the nose are notes of blackcurrant, black pepper, cooked, crushed raspberries, stewed fig, plums, mint leaf, baking spices of vanilla and slight cinnamon with some dried leaves and some forest floor in the background.

The palate is dry, with some tannins though this could be cellared for 5-10 more years. Some green capsaicin, bell pepper and oak. A tinge of tobacco leaf, and a ton of red fruits. Also a nice bit of cinnamon apple spice on the finish.

Had this wine with a charred filet and it really brought out some wonderful black pepper on both. Beautiful blend and makes me want to try more from them.

Bottled 2018 Glentauchers Aged 8 Years Sherry Puncheon Cask Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2010

Utterly fantastic. Got turned on to this from a guy at a scotch place on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Wasn’t at all familiar with “single cask” bottlings...but clearly with the right person making the selection, the result can be off the charts. Easily among the top 10 scotches I’ve ever had, this is brilliant. Great nose that provides layers of sweet malt, some molasses, and a hint of peat, this has a beautiful mouthfeel with an expansive palate that just blossoms with hints of sherry, vanilla, and spice, ending with a seamless, lingering finish. Awesome. — 7 years ago

Easter wine. A nice interpretation of Cabernet Franc with a bit more fruit than my preferred guys from the Loire region. Still had some of this typical, slightly pepper notes too. A very nice example from a nearly unknown part of the world in the matter of wine. I only miss a bit of punch on the mid-palate. Nice acidity. Can age easily for 10 more years. — 9 years ago

Merlot

This one is lighter on the acid than many sub $10 wines but for only $3.... Including tax. Decent flavor. Not complex at all and good to drink right from the bottle. More complexity and flavor than boxed wines and richer too. If you like $2/$3 buck chuck then give this one a try. Not at all sorry I bought it. *update* just ate a pack of oloves olives (basil garlic) with this wind and man o man did it jump the flavor up a ton. Seems like the pairing this wine is capable of is geared towards more vinegar-ish food. Basil and and garlic complement it well too. — 10 years ago
