Deep brooding big syrah. Blue and black fruits. Still very young. Toasty oak notes. A little leather & some spice. Great bottle of wine. Wow!

Amazingly, this treasure, my last bottle of the saturated purple '99 Ojai Syrah 'Thompson Vineyard', was much fresher and significantly fruitier than the previous bottle consumed about a year ago. This one I drank immediately after decanting (with copious sediment). Super dense aromatics and smoky flavors of dark fruit, damp earth, cracked pepper, leather and licorice abounded. The silky finish was long, powerful and eminently satisfying.

After a two hour decant, with an enormous amount of sediment, the inky reddish purple '99 Ojai Syrah 'Thompson Vyd.' no longer exhibited its youthful blackberry aromas. They were replaced with gamey stewed fig, plum and bacon fat scents. Spicy black pepper and mocha flavors in the mid-palate with fully resolved tannins. A long sweet finish. I definitely need to drink my last bottle really soon.
