This was a big surprise. Transitions significantly over a few hours. Opens with lavender and leather, with some beautifully weaved in brett. Quickly moves into blackberry, incense, and chalky/clay minerality. Later pivots to a more broad floral style, Luden's, and bitter dark chocolate.

Drank 8/12/17 with Chicken Marsala. PNP.
Saw this at Costco for around 7$, so thought id give it a whirl.
Light nose of sour cherry and undergrowth. Palate of moderate overripe red fruit, with sweet cherry, forrest floor, and medium drying tannins. Moderate length. Gets a little better with half an hour of air, not bad, but nothing impressive either. Drinks a little hot.
2/18/6/4/4 + 50 = 84 pts

Tastes like a passable cotes du Rhone for not a lot of money, under $7. Definitely not the best cotes du Rhone wine but I've had, but possibly the best value.

$7 at costco. Peppery smoke and fruit forward nose. Let this one breathe for 10-20 minutes, the body comes through to be a bit cherry and earthy. Would be a good wine with a chocolate dessert

My first rhone/GSM blend.
A vibrant dark red with a nose of a little smoke, dried strawberry and a whiff of wet wood. It was tough to pick out individual smells with this one.
On the palette you get juice box for the first few seconds and then it quickly moves to dusty rocky earthiness. Well balanced, but the earthiness is distracting. There should be something a little more there. Good value.

Yes, I may have made a trip to Costco recently. This GSM is, for one, very young. It's not overly diverse on the nose - mostly black fruits (including grapes) with a whiff of smoke - but the palette is, after a juicy burst, almost all earth. The tannins are also bold, and even with some time to breathe really don't subside (it is a 2015, after all). Still, for a bargain price you can't help but appreciate some of the finer nuances this wine, as earthy and tannic as it is, has to offer.
