Nose kicks you in the butt on open. Mineral. Fruit. Elegant smoke. Awesome. As this opens it’s a beautiful thing.
Palate is equally great. Perfect blend of tropical and. Green apple. Mineral. Delicious. Great acidity. Only lacks elite density to be truly great.
As it opens has this balanced crazy complexity. Almost puligny-ish in the fruit mineral acid interplay. This is very very good.
A fantastic wine. Especially for the price.

I heard something today on IDTT that exemplifies tasting this wine - never explicitly was the term "great" terrior used, but I think it's safe to say that the discussion was about great terrior. A "great" vineyard isn't necessarily better than others in terms of quality... Or even necessarily need to represent the covering GI... but it is "great" because of clarity. It produces a unique expression CONSTANTLY, irrespective of vintage or producer. In short, it speaks precisely of a place... Cliché but truly. And that's Pettenthal! Time and time again I've seen this. With KP, Kai, Gunderloch, Kuhling-Gillot. Pettenthal is great and this wine sealed it for me.
Brought this to blind KP. It was an obvious choice since KP's tiny super plot was once part of FK Schmitt's holdings. Despite the differences with KP's insane 17' auction wine (vintage, style, vineyard size, philosophy), this wine was clearly Pettenthal. That cool and smoky elements that I've learned to associate with the vineyard, fine minerally backbone. Damn! This has to be one of the most tightly focused aged Auslese's I've had in a while. What a pristine bottle - all thanks to Roland's exquisite sourcing skills. Stone fruits, petrol, honey, spice, umami elements. Finish was admittedly one-dimensional. Could be longer. Still, what a lovely #rieslingstudy — 7 years ago
Incredibly floral nose of grapefruit, pineapple, vanilla. Dry, crisp, great acid. Fantastic value. Another winner from Vintry. — 10 years ago
Superb nose of aromatic limestone, guava, lime zest, fresh juicy limes, some peach and apricot as well but all on a bed of limestone. So pretty. Gorgeous pure and vivid nose. Palate is heavenly. Vibrant and engaging. Floats and is so elegant. Nierstein is a special place for Kabinett. Reminds me of the best the Mosel has to offer. Really the elegance here is top notch. Has the perfect sugar balance as well. It’s truly off dry. Really wonderful wine. Sappy and engaging and really so mineral and focused. Almost 9.5. — 4 years ago

Sickness. Just an amazing wine. Nose smells like elite St. Aubin or boss Meursault. Floral, hint of butter, blast of limestone. Beeswax. So so good amazingly pure. So so aromatic. Just blasts your nostrils. Ripe but also so many cooling minerals. Complex, juicy and so ripe. So pure. Chardonnay drop. Long finish. Just pure pleasure. — 4 years ago
Oh my! Brilliant riesling. Sure, not as Kabinett as some would hope but excellent balance here. Tingling acidity and lovely fruit. — 9 years ago

Big, dripping nose of apricot, peach, sweet saffron, minerals, paprika, spice and so much more. Beautiful and complex. Honey. Tangelo. So focused. Gorgeous. Palate is rich, ripe and exotic with great tension from the acids. Compact and complex. Long, juicy finish. Wonderful viscous and fresh fruit. Like a honeyed, guava/papaya/mango/peach/tangelo waterfall. So good. Lovey tanginess of fruit and acid on the finish. Stunning. — 4 years ago
