The wines from Ronda tend to be quite earthy due to the heavily weathered limestone presence in the soil. This wine incorporates this deep minerality nicely with black fruit aromas and flavors, and a spiciness that brings it all together. Acid is medium plus, tannins are smooth yet grippy meaning this will age, although with a nice decant it is drinkable now. — 6 years ago
Tart summer cherries with subtle chocolate notes. A hint of cinnamon and blackberry riding a weathered horse's saddle. Bright acidity of fresh cut wildflowers. — 7 years ago
This totally encapsulates my feelings today, my sadness over the loss of a great icon. Tobacco, darkness, rough and tumble weathered psyche. This wine brings you that much closer to feeling that death spiral, though you realize your biological levity will intervene. Others aren’t so lucky. This wine is a toast to someone who could not conquer darkness himself, but nurtured his inner darkness to bend the rest of us toward the light. May you finally feel at home, restless wanderer. — 7 years ago
Incredible value. All tar and roses. Inviting and generous. Pruney, shriveled up fruit, dust, mid palate like an old, weathered leather belt you find at Goodwill, a very tannic almost dry grape soda quality? Fabulous. — 8 years ago
Profound. Still powerful, yet with elegance and grace that belies its ancient wisdom. Supremely balanced between dried plums and blackberries smeared across a weathered leather saddle with a cigar box in the corner of the room and Coltrane wafting through the clouds of sandalwood. — 8 years ago
Love it. Oxygen and time have weathered it, sculpted it into something much more than just fruit and oak and Spanish sun. — 9 years ago
So very class! Black as space, with a nebula of chestnut. Rides high, but dismounts to palomino stars and bubble islands. Swirl it and it stacks right back up! Witchy runes and dismembered arms clutching axes narrate the lacing. Pecan and hazelnut, charred caramel, bitter chocolate and black bread with burnt caraway and salted licorice! That’s just the nose. Medium mouthfeel drops pure dark chocolate to coat the tongue, blackened brittle, a treacle touch that hardens like toffee over rye. Fine coffee, black, but home from the pub smelling of vanilla, a bitter bout with chit and chicory, but nutty like baked walnut atop a brownie. Delicious stuff! Glad I revisited! Just the balm to soothe a weathered soul in a time of crisis. Cheers!

A reliably excellent off dry bottling from this small vineyard site - a five hectare monopole controlled by Kesselstatt. Great weight on the palate with the perfect bit of RS to pair with a spicy curry.
More info: 23 g/l RS, 7.2 g/l acidity. South-south-west exposure, grey weathered Devonian slate. — 6 years ago
1987 vintage holding up excellently, despite a weathered label on this particular bottle. — 7 years ago
Matthiasson produces both a red and white Tendu. The 2015 white Tendu is Vermentino based with some French Colombard and a small percentage of a mix of Italian white varietals. The Vermentino is from weathered, pink gravelly alluvium in the Dunnigan Hills AVA. Fermented in neutral barrels, inoculated with yeast from Champagne, no ML, no batonnage and sterile filtered.
Pear, lemon, white flowers, and loaded with minerality and acid. With its low alcohol (11.7% abv), ultra-refreshing, super-crushable style, the 1 liter bottling is a good move. — 7 years ago
Arena's flagship wine, coming from a limestone vineyard that required a jackhammer to plant the vines. Purchased upon release and I can't tell you how many times I've talked myself out of opening this bottle. It was worth the wait. The timing couldn't be better. An inspiring, coming of age wine that beautifully displays its juxtaposition of French and Italian influences. Weathered black cherry, vividly fresh lavender, worn leather, clay pottery, and a distinct minerality that shows depth and verve. — 8 years ago
Fully developed and perhaps slightly on its down swing, but still a lot to love about this wine. Really burgundian nose with pounding tertiary aromas. Decaying earth, wet bark, canned mushrooms, dried flowers, berries with baking spice and that unnamable "funk" that calls back to its french heritage. Acid and structure holding together like a weathered but elegant victorian home. Its everything i love about pinot — 9 years ago
Its like a Listrac-Mèdoc grown at elevation. What an interesting wine. Black currants, black berries, weathered leather, crushed herbs, and roasted spices such as anise. The Merlot tannins are smooth and dusty, but it's the acidity that really sets it apart from other Napa blends. — 9 years ago
Tasted blind (suspected aged Cornas) - Dark purple core fading to weathered ruby. Smoked beef, barnyard, and animal sweat over dried plum and blackberry fruits. Palate echos a sense of meatiness with dark forest berries. Dry to finish with length and depth. — 6 years ago
2004 Sine Qua Non "Ode to E" Central Coast Grenache.
Gearing up for a major snowstorm here in Chicago. A great reason to pull the cork on greatness. On one of the best Grenache wines I’ve ever tasted. Heck, maybe THE best. If not first in it’s class, it definitely doesn’t take long to call the roll. Certainly one of my favorite wines, period. I love everything about it including the label: “A Love Forever In Bloom, Face With Tracks Of Life’s Attacks, Tattooed Scars Of History, Weathered Crust, Full Of Lust For That Rose Of Love For E.” The wine? The nose is a dreamy aromatic symphony of roses and raspberry compote. Also incense, pepper, graphite and a touch of smokey something off in the background somewhere. Beautiful. The palate is blast of sweet dark berry liqueur with that pepper and Asian spice creeping in on the backside. So lush. So complex. The finish? Intense, rather spicy and never ending. Never ending! As with all things Krankl, mind boggling balance between depth, complexity, raw power and utter weightless elegance. Simply put: Perfect. However you choose to define it. I think my favorite definition of perfection is from Coach Gary Gaines: “Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didnt let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasnt one more thing you could've done.” Well Manfred can certainly look us all in the eye on this one! — 6 years ago
2015 is showing like a beautiful weathered champion. — 7 years ago
Straight up purple. Aromas of dusty minerality, a big wallop of vanilla, dried brown spices, weathered wood, homemade cranberry sauce and juicy, ripe plums. A little light than medium bodied but with a rich and round mouthfeel. Flavors of plum, cranberry and blackberries. Finishes with those fruits, the addition of cola, and a silky coating. — 8 years ago
This was deliciously cranberry driven initially, with yesterday's coffee, plum, pepper and black walnut, which re-perfumed into yesterday's baked Bing cherry pie and dusty, cedar hope chests filled with vellum and pressed wildflowers. Raspberry, mint and pomegranate with bits of pith. Earthy, smoky and tumultuous with firm, but sultry tannins throughout. A dusky lady climbing a volcano in a weathered frock. — 8 years ago

Puffy clouds float atop alpenglow orange opacity, lacing the barriers with the remains of heraldic coats of arms weathered nearly indistinguishable by time, like the thin anonymous gravestones in ancient churchyards. Orange and tangerine, clementine and thyme, ruby grapefruit, and candied lemon, Froot Loops, green grapes, dragon fruit and kiwi scented. Lovely lime and lemongrass, quince, cardamom pod, chamomile, white pepper dusted pineapple, pomelo, and steely minerality that fractures into micro clove and aniseed while immersed in lemon oils and orange. Really nice offering. Keeps you guessing and offers some interesting taste combos.
