Rhinofields Merlot 1999

From my father’s cellar, this was opened for about an hour in the bottle before pouring. We were worried that we held onto this wine for too long. But weren't we surprised, especially for 16 year old wine at under $9.00! The color is deep and dark opaque red. Love the nose on this wine. Very gentle but started with a soft barnyard or farm smell, not manure. Then moved on to chalk, dark berries and flowers. Very savory and delicious on the palate complemented with beautifully balanced moderate tannins and body. Very well integrated, so smooth and well put together. Only downside was the short finish. But who cares for $9.00 a bottle and still so deliciously smooth after 16 years! I will try a newer vintage in South Africa later this year, and if it continues to do this well it will be one of my top 5 wines under $10. — 10 years ago

Cape of Good Hope Shiraz 2012

Amazing Shiraz from a winery with an even more amazing view. Not as good as the 2011, but still in my top 10! Subtle eucalyptus on the nose and the dark berries and vanilla taste linger wonderfully. — 10 years ago

Pinot Noir 2013

Tasted the 2013 vintage. Better than expected! Still not as great as their Tintoretto or Pinotage in my opinion, but #3 on the most underrated winery in Cape Town is still pretty darn good! — 10 years ago
