Eged-Hegy Dülö Kékfrankos 2012

Somm David T
9.2

On the nose, savory, wild, dark berries, blue berries, black raspberries, raspberries, smoke, vanilla, light cinnamon, fresh dark florals and moist black earth. The palate is leaner medium. The tannins are soft and round. Bright, ripe fruits of; blackberries, dark cherries, plum, dark cherries, moist dark earth, stones, soft leather, wood shavings, steeped black fruit tea, dark fresh florals, bright round acidity and a round, fresh, ripe, fruity finish. Excellent for around $25. Producer notes...Dr. János Stumpf studied under Tibor Gál, internationally known winemaker of SuperTuscan Ornalia. Dr. Stumpf dry farms approximately 15 hectares of vines on the south facing hill of Eged. They are split between two vineyards with very similar conditions, Sik Dülö and EgedHegy Dülö or the Eged Hill Vineyard. Both are planted in almost pure limestone on a 20% grade situated about half way up the hill...the mid point of a hill or slope is an excellent location for angle to the sun. Aged in mostly large 500L barrels (3/4 new) which; allowes for very slow oxidation and a more nuanced influence of oak. After an average of 20 months in barrel, they are kept in separate lots until the final blend. All wines were bottled unfiltered and stored for a minimum of 1 year before release. Pairings; herbed pheasant, lamb, pungent creamy cheeses and whole grain based dishes like barley or faro. For the authentic experience, wild venison is recommended. — 9 years ago

Bartok 2009

Huzzah. What a treat. This is wild. Super nutty creamy on the palate, dry finish. Not terribly fruity but what's there is ripe. Is drink this in front of a fire in winter for sure. Great price point. — 11 years ago

Superior Pinot Noir

Gal Tibor pinot noir superior. Single vineyard "Grober". This is a superb pinot noir that desperately needs to be opened ahead of time. A big, bold and serious wine that has so much going on both in the glass, the nose and mouth. Not an everyday wine and wasn't meant to be soft and subtle - it wants to hit you hard and make you really think about what you are discovering over time in the glass. This amazing and rough wine is going to be something to look forward to as it ages. — 10 years ago

Egri Bikaver- Pajados Blaufränkisch 2009

'Bull's Blood' wine from the Eger region. Made with 50% Hungarian grapes and 50% Bordeaux blend grapes. Made in a more classic style than many bigger Bull's Blood wines one can find. — 11 years ago

Dél Kopár-dűlő Villányi Red Blend 2013

Del (means South) 2013 cuvee of Merlot, cab sauv, can franc, and little kekfrankos. Aged in small Hungarian medium toasted barrique for one year, then aged together in one large barrel for half year, then one year in bottle. Nose is a pretty mix of attributes of all four. Nice tannins, not overly. Very pleasant little wine. — 10 years ago

Sik Hegy Egri Pinot Noir 2004

2004, unfiltered edition. Many reserved aromas open up nicely as it gets more air. Porcini, forest floor... I wouldn't keep it for longer, but a very vivid, nice experience at the moment. — 11 years ago
