KAYAFAS Xinomavro 2018

Poured into a decanter about 30min prior to service. The 2018 Thymiopoulos Vineyards “Kayafas” is one of their single-vineyard expressions of Xinomavro. The fruit is sourced from their lowest altitude vineyard, sees extended maceration (40 days); partially whole cluster. It pours a beautiful deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core. Medium viscosity with very light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is very pretty with notes of strawberries, tart cherries, plums, dried green herbs, stony earth minerals and some subtle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. The notes from the nose are confirmed. Alcohol is medium. The finish is long. While certainly unique, it has one foot in Burgundy and one foot in Piemonte. A marvelous pairing with seared duck breast with beetroot risotto.

Naoussa Jeunes Vignes de Xinomavro 2015

Moroccan cuisine and Greek wine are a winning combo tonight in Montreal at dinner with my little sister. Anise, jasmine, rose, lavender, raspberry, smoke and dust together form a light bodied wine with tension and intense fragrance. Absolutely lovely and a steal too. — 7 years ago

Ghi Kai Uranos Naoussa Xinomavro 2011

Considering naming my first born Naoussa, such is my love of this grape variety (Grüner was never really an option, but I love that cepage too). This little Greek number was divine-rich and complex with notes of sous bois, berries and spice. A perfect start to last weekend, shared with friends and a big plate of stinky French cheese! — 11 years ago

I adore this botlle. Was my first date with a Greek wine. And indeed, this can be associated to Burgundy Pinot Noir or Barbaresco Nebbiolo

Terra Petra Rapsani Xinomavro Blend 2017

9.3

The Greek wines were the best of the bunch!

The Rapsani had cigar box, burning wood, barnyard, cherries, and campfire. Lovely!

The last wine was a dessert wine that was brown in color and contained massive caramel. Very thick and sweet, but refined.

One of the first natural wines of Greece, produced in the North. Opulent wine, powerful, pronounced red fruit. Label is written in French since all wines are exported to France and Canada. Don't they like natural wine in Greece @Kostas katsaros? @ Le Baratin — 9 years ago

@Sudeep Rangi Too bad that I missed you yesterday! It was my day off yesterday. Are you still in town today?

@Roel van der Burg , natural wine is it not there yet or not really famous among the big estates and famous producers. But there are a lot of wine producers ( local and also amateurs) that make natural and unfiltered wines - she some of them really bad some of them very good.

Meaty, iodine, & red currant on the nose. Palate much more opulent than expected. Different but slightly less enjoyable than the Thymiopoulos. — 4 years ago

Big bodied, large tannins, raspberries, and ash like quality from the volcanic soil. Great wine for the price and amazing substitute if you don't want to spend the money on a Barolo or Barberesco. — 9 years ago

Looks like moscato. Smells like moscato. Slightly effervescent like a moscato. And yet it tastes dry... good with Ottolenghi recipies and adventurous souls. — 12 years ago
