Oakville Ranch

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

Another great showing for 1995 Napa Valley Cab. Astounding, room-filling nose of cigar box and leather. On the palate, leaned a touch more to acidity than fruit, but showed well over two nights. — 8 years ago

Chappellet

Mountain Cuvée Proprietor's Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Created for Disney, this fittingly shows a bit of magic. Black currant, blackberry, prominent anise w/ vanillin. Really delivers without overwhelming- spice box and anise on the palate rather than a fruit bomb. Impressive! — 10 years ago

Pi 3.1415 Calatayud Concejon

Game changer....haven't had a wine from Spain that impresses me as this none does. 40 ish...easily taking on the blends coming out of napa that go for double. Touch of bourbon smoky oak, layer after layer of black magic chocolate box ....can't wait to get this back to BC — 12 years ago

Shvo Vineyards

Upper Galilee Red Blend 2015

first wine I'm having from shvo vineyard.
the winemaker used to work at one of Israel's biggest winery and left, bought his own vineyard and that's his playground.
different grapes from mainstream Merlot, cabarnet sauvignon, sustainablity and non kosher are the magic words written about shvo.
clearly a wine critics winery.

this is a red blend of barbera, grenache, syrah and mourvader.
so gsm with added fanculo 😊
one year oak treatment.

14.5% ABV 💪

dense red with long legs 👀

leather and cigar box first. followed by peppercorn, vanilla, dark chocolate. some ripe cherry and dried plum finish the complex spicy 👃

medium + body.
medium - acidity.

silky spicebox with the cherry's tartness and some leather hints 👄

soft, tingling and pleasent tannins. medium🎯 with fruit leftovers lingering.

2015 is considered a problematic vintage in israel. this is complex and balanced. but the spice profile reminds me a 2015 syrah i had from a winery close by. so will be interesting to try another vintage to compare.

it's a very good wine. intresting and satisfying.

excellent vfm (90 nis). israely reds in that price wouldn't usually impress.

had it on it's own. feels gastronomic, we shall find out in a couple of hours when dinner will be served.
later on it worked pretty well with dinner and lunch the next day. feels like an easy day to day drinking red, made better.

looking forward to try some more shvo.

24hr later the fruit came forward and the body felt firmer. still great...

Booker Vineyard

Pink Rosé 2013

Decent dry Grenache-based rose for a nice sunny evening with a fine cigar. Cohiba Maduro 5: Absolute magic smoke with perfect humidity and deep mellow nuttiness, leather, sandalwood, cedar, spice box. Amazing subtle complexity that holds your attention and keeps you coming back for another draw. 9.8. Thanks Mark. — 10 years ago

Founders Brewing Company

Dank Wood Imperial Red India Pale Ale

Twice-flambé-d bananas foster. Oak char, tea biscuit, brown sugar, baked graham cracker crust, vanilla bean, chocolate edibles. Incredible mouthfeel, vacillates between creamy-sweet and an almost brassy pètillant resonance, whose impulsiveness is tamed by the soft influence of oak. Everything is right with this combo of red ale and oak. Just enough restraint here to let the elements work their magic. Bitter entry subduing sweet notes of Turkish coffee, milk chocolate, cigar box, rum raisin, cinnamon stick. — 6 years ago

Lost & Found

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

2013
What a killer balance of opposites on the nose: a wave of bright, ripe berries is followed by an aged, black-fruit-forward note that kinda reminds me of Rioja reserva! An elegant cologne-scent peaks out behind waves of fresh fruit. On the palate, that subtle interplay continues. I love the amount of leather, cologne, and cigar box I get on this fresh, new-world delicacy! Magic!

Maui Blanc Pineapple Wine

I had a typical tourist experience with this wine. Went to the winery on a recommendation from a friend while on vacation, and loved it. We had some sent home and didn't know if we would like it when we weren't surrounded by the magic of vacation. Turns out we still love it.
Sweet like a reisling, but not anywhere near as cloyingly sweet as you would expect. Beautiful sweet summer afternoon wine. It tastes more like a reisling with overtones of pineapple. We just ordered another box for the holidays. If you're only happy with dry and deeply complex whites you won't enjoy it. But if you also appreciate light and sweet, this experiment in pineapple wine is a must-try.

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1993

1993 vintage. From Jay. the cork on this bottle was pulled approximately two hours prior to being decanted. the wine was poured immediately post decanting.
the colour of the wine immediately grabs your attention. a glorious ruby hue worthy of a gemstone. perfect translucency and frankly a joy to observe. pinot juice as perfect as it can possibly look, majestically glinting in the tables candle light. after being allowed to gently open in the glass the wine displayed a degree of feminine ferality in a most pleasant manner. with time this was complemented by fraises sauvages, crushed black forest fruits and cuban tobacco wrapper. the feral element continued to present through a very slight earthiness and tones of wild mushrooms. this eventually gave way to crushed violets and roses which eventually poured over the glass and across the table. quite wonderful. the body was full with great complexity and finesse. this wine has tremendous power. its balance was beguiling and the combination of femininity on the nose with a gracefully powerful structure and depth of fruit truly provided the best of both worlds with an astounding finish. this is an epic wine which frankly ticks every box and is certainly within its drinking window. the acidity and abundant levels fruit still mean that this wine has many years ahead of it but frankly i'd be hard pressed to hold off. in short, this is a dessert island wine. 100/100
