Riverain is Steve Nordhoff and Dean & Laurie Gray’s label that produces just a few hundred cases from some select vineyards in Northern California, including a Tench Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.
According to Dean Gray, Riverain is a historically French term meaning “local & friendly people who reside near the river.” @Greg Ballington deserves credit for the reco, and while I’ve had a handful of Syrahs from the Cardiac Hill Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Bennett Valley, this is my first that’s made by Thomas Rivers Brown.
Screams old world, particularly Northern Rhône. Loved it from the get-go, but the acceleration at 90 minutes open is significant. Campfire grilled meat, finely ground pepper, black olive, and creosote, with a core of savory black fruit, and a beautiful secondary combination of cedar and lavender. There’s a distinctive combination of balance, purity of fruit, and savory structure that’s hard not to recognize. — 8 years ago
Deep purplish red. After an hour or so in the decanter this was still tight with green notes and a little black cherries. Finally on day two there were tons of 'Bevan' fruits, black and blue with tons of cinnamon and vanilla. Heavy tannins (8/10) and full bodied. This lost a little bit of weight in the mid palate but beefed up on day two. Tons of structure and dark cherries on day one with a slightly stoney and savory finish. Day two brought in the same characteristics as the nose, tons of blue and black fruits as well as cinnamon and vanilla. A touch of heat in the long finish that should dissipate with time. Should be in a sweet spot in about 7 years or so. Drink from 2018 till 2030. (94+) — 9 years ago

What a deal what a deal what a deal - I will put this napa cab up against wines twice it's price - 2 hour decant and it's sings -
Taste is incredible fruit - dark blue and red fruit - highly structured tannins with density and complexity galore - smell works but it will get more aromatic in 2-3 years - If drinking now as I did then please decant
This comes from Tench vineyards - same as the acclaimed bevan - well I say drink this at half the price then you tell me the difference
This is big bold beautiful and I am smiling

Day 3 in Napa in the books! Running a day behind on notes...Napa time runs slow AND fast!
Where as normal Tench was feminine in style (loads of fruit), this had smoked meat, herbal and savory notes alongside baked blue and blackberries. Incredible structure while also being accessible (Bevan style). Really enjoyed this. — 7 years ago
