Homage Washington State Red Blend 2010

I have (almost) never rated s wine a perfect 10... But this one, THIS one, is perfect! The pepper and gaminess of the Mourvedre is powerful and lingers on and on. The Cinsault and Grenache add a touch of bright red fruit and sweet berry notes. It could easily have gone a few more years. Mind, blown... — 9 years ago

Gorgeous nose of complex berry fruit, earth, rocks, licorice, spice. Really expressive and complex out of the gates. Complex, structured and juicy palate. Such complexity and finesse. So fresh. I so love these wines. Amazing purity. This should not be drunk this young but I am still amazed at the material despite its closed state. — 9 years ago

A super exciting, multi-dimensional wine! Deep ruby, garnet color; exotic black fruit aroma, with a complementary nudge of oak, berry-scented; medium bodied, firm and well built on the palate; dry, medium acidity, well balanced; complex flavors of red and black fruits, lots of flavor interest; medium finish. One of the great Pinot Noirs in the state, needs more time to gain further complexities. (Best Served: 2019-2027) [Composition: 100% Pinot Noir] [Winemaking Highlights: Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured), 15% whole clusters, 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 65% new Burgundian French oak barrels; bottled without fining or filtration] [Production: 684 cases] [James Hall, Winemaker] — 11 years ago

Quilceda Creek

Washington Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

This is the first time I've tasted this legendary producer, I have to admit, Quilceda Creek lives up to its reputation. There is a kind of restraint to this wine that is difficult to achieve in Washington State. Tasted blind, the 1998 could easily be mistaken for an aged Saint Julien. The nose is generous and complex, with aromatics of boysenberry, juniper berry, herb and spice notes. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, with silky texture and layers of red and black seed-studded fruit. Cigar box and spice on the finish. — 11 years ago

Abeja

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

This is one of those where the aromas make your eyebrows raise, in a good way. Elegant nose of cherries, spice, rose petal. Strangely Pinot-like. Palate wise it’s all Cab Sauv offering up dark berry/cherry, licorice, baking spice, and an herbal note. Soft tannins rounds it out. Made from some of the finest vineyards in the state, one to seek out for sure. QPR in check as well. — 8 years ago

On the nose, baked & slightly liqueured fruits of; lots of blue fruits, plum, black raspberries, raspberries, underbrush, saline, violets, and dry brown top soil. On the palate, concentrated blue fruits of; boysenberries, blueberries, olallieberries. Stewed plums, black raspberries & raspberries. They are in a liqueured syrupy state. The tannins are silty. Wild berry cola/licorice, underbrush, touch of vanilla & caramel, loamy dry soils, steep fruit tea, dry stones, liquid violets & the acidity pours over the palate. The rich, thick, fruity finish doesn't stop. It's drinking very nicely but likely peaked a year ago. However, still a nice example of how well his wines age. Photo tour of our April visit to Noon Winery. Winery, estate vines, open top fermenter and Drew Noon pouring our tasting. He is a very down to earth/salt of the earth guy. @David A Lentine it was a great evening with friends and what a better way to enjoy it than with this fine bottle. Jennifer and I thank you so very much for sharing this. A distinctive red blend that is drinking perfect. Supple and smooth texture offering dark berry, blue fruits and plum. Ideally this is how all tannins should be integrated, wonderful! Nice long finish that shows puffs of smoke and the return of the fruit. — 9 years ago

Rhys Vineyards

Home Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007

About five years since I last had this and back then it was as closed down a wine as I've ever had from Rhys, or from the entire United States of America for that matter. It's very interesting what's happened, as it's now come out of its closed state but not by getting more advanced. Instead it's moved in the opposite direction and gushes with fresh primary fruit in the manner of a Rhys pinot fresh off the UPS truck. It has an inky gloss with dark wild berry and plum flavors but it takes a couple hours in the decanter for it to really show off its distinction. That's when the quality of the tannins starts to show and it becomes notable more than anything for its silky refinement. — 9 years ago

Montevertine

Le Pergole Torte Sangiovese 1997

A business lunch with Jonathan and Gillian at one of the great Italian restaurants of Los Angeles. Recent commentary implying that the 97 was a bit wobbly and on the downslope required I pull the cork on one of my small stash of Le Pergole Torte. Happy to say the reports of a deteriorating state seem exaggerated. Mature, yes - decrepit, no! A beautifully developed berry richness with a hint of tea rose in the nose. Supporting tannins are gentle, but firm. Not PC to buy this wine any longer, a pity, as I imagine later vintages will develop into something as inviting as this one in time. With Gino's fantastic array of pastas; lamb ragu, limonate, seafood. Loved the wine loved the food. — 9 years ago

Lovely leafy notes with notes of camphor in this Cabernet dominant red blend. The palate shows good sweet. berry fruit power with the Cabernet fleshed out with Syrah Merlot and Malbec. A note of milk chocolate. Overall a very satisfying rich Red similar to the richness you get in Reds from neighbouring Washington State. La Grange aux Belles

Le Vin de Jardin Grolleau Blend

A lightly macerated red? A rose with a little extra skin contact? What's the difference? Nothing really - it all depends on your state of mind (and in our cases, where we have room on the shelves!) So call this one whatever you need to justify trying a bottle. Because it's awesome. It's classic glou glou from the obscure grolleau grape, grown organically in the Loire Valley. It packs a major flavor punch with a little tart berry fruit, a touch of spice, excellent with a chill and just 11.5% abv so it's highly glugable. And it comes in three sizes - in non-Goldilocks form, we think the jerobaum is just about right. — 9 years ago

Charles & Charles

Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah

The 2013 vintage Charles & Charles is a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend from Washington State's prestigious Columbia valley. Syrah fruit is picked in whole cluster berries and blended-in to produce a well balanced, highly structured wine with deep ruby red colour. Intense and well-integrated aromatics of black berry, red berry, tobacco leaf, beets, and a pleasant hint of eucalyptus and black sage. This wine shows medium plus tannins, medium plus intensity on fruit and acidity and is well-balanced. Recommend enjoying with rosemary sprig infused lamb, prime rib, vegan beet root salad with balsamic reduction. Enjoy 2015-2025. — 10 years ago
