Birth year wines are a tricky thing. We all want them to show well because we are opening them for an occasion. ‘81 North Coast is not a vaunted vintage but this is the the 3rd year in a row I’ve shared a birthday bottle with one of my all time favorite females....and each and every time the ‘81s deliver. Naturally made, bush vine, no grafting. Very interesting and unexpected expression of Chenin. Slightly more tropical, but still restrained, not as nutty and very savory. Not quite as acidic as French Chenin. Lovely wine. — 11 years ago

A study in vintage variation...a perfectly stored bottle that showed well...for a mature wine geek, this was lovely. Medium concentration, smooth as silk, beautiful aged claret nose of leather and menthol. Lasted for about 2 hours. — 9 years ago

I don't understand Caymus-haters. Sure, the setting didn't hurt, but with a half-hr decant the nose was rich cassis, vanilla. Showing a little age, the dark red fruit, tobacco and oaky-rich tannins were smooth as silk. Ready but could go for 5-10 years. Plum, mushrooms, and rose hips, head up a nice flavor profile for a regularly underrated wine. Almost a milk chocolate lactic mouthfeel with Tannins made of silk and the sweetest kiss of acid. Decanted the mag 1.5 hours before pouring. On the nose this wine exudes deep dark fruit with cedar box & vanilla. On the palate this wine is liquid silk and coats the mouth then the fruit and oak are integrated beautifully and lingers on the palate leaving you wanting more!! — 10 years ago
