Classic Pinot Gris from south facing slopes in the Guebwiller valley in Alsace. Off dry on the palate with some apple, pear and a touch of citrus. With good acidity and minerality, the wine did open up some more in the glass. Still youthful, it had a very refreshing mouthfeel. This would pair well with fois gras and soft cheeses.

A delicious Grand Cru Alsatian Riesling from Schlumberger. The Saering 2011 is fine-tuned and surprisingly powerful. Grown in marl-limestone-sandstone soils, where vine roots burrow deep, the countenance of this wine one of white peaches and lemon curd, complicated by a pretty, herbaceous veneer. On the palate, it's lush and creamy, with decadent layers of orchard fruit hemmed in by stoniness and spice.
