Wonderful soft palate with notes of plum and blackberry. Some cherry on the front end with a hint of asphalt. Full mouthful of peach and grapefruit with undertones of almond, tobacco, pine, licorice, cardamom, red velvet, turmeric, oatmeal, cayenne, newspaper, Oreos, bicycle chain, chitlins, camembert, burnt umber, huckleberry, Ripple, plain yogurt, lemongrass, kohlrabe, anise, eggplant, kohlrabi, everything bagel, paczki, aspartame, caramel, coconut, latte, beef carpaccio, pine nuts, Wonder Bread, calamari, watermelon radish Jolly Rancher, aglet, sawdust, gnocchi and red grape. Finish is definitely Bruno Kirby. Pretty complex. — 7 years ago
Unreal that I have not tried Italian whites with this complexity before. Major gap in wine appreciation. This is deceptively hot on the nose, but on tasting it's a medium to full with bracing back acidity. Smells of pineapple and kiwi, but the mouth is all quince pucker and yellow fruit. Just amazing with a fatty flavorful fish or roast chicken — 8 years ago
Great with spicy food (in my case clams and nduja) - lightly effervescent with mild sweetness. Also easy drinking on its own, like when you want champagne but can't commit to the party. Michael makes the best recommendations! — 9 years ago
Still a young wine and could go many more years. Well balanced with a mushroom and black truffle overtone. — 10 years ago
A touch of VA and a heavy spicy nose, super-refined and bright and zesty on the palate...really fine stuff. — 11 years ago
2000 blend - it's amazing. Astonishingly good. — 11 years ago
Isn't Amarone Italian for "love?" If it isn't, it should be! "Amarone." "Amore." A rose by any other name... — 12 years ago
Concentrated red fruit encased in chocolate and finished with licorice and finishing with bright acidity. Generous and opulent yet balanced. — 13 years ago
The 96' Riserva Pira had my nose stuck in the glass the whole time. I just couldn't get enough of the incredible bouquet. Even the tail ends were intoxicating. Ahhh!!! Full-on rose petals, violet, plums, dried cherries, blueberries, tar, spices (cinnamon and clove especially), undergrowth, tabacco leaf, and balsamic tones. So complex and lifted. It's just ahhh and ahhhhhhhh again and again as this wine bombarded the olfacotry system. On the other hand, the palate was quite stubborn at the start, but eventually gave way to some sweet fruit notes of fresh cherries and plums, plus hints of stoney minerality at the end. It's thick and dense, with firm but well-honed tannins and ample acidity. So fresh and young that it just begs for time, but how can one resist the beautiful smells right now. Probably the best nebbiolo I've had in a while. — 6 years ago
Woof. Fermenty, citrusy, creamy aromas. Long, slow, peppery burn. Finish never ends. — 9 years ago
Great stuff! Still an admirable tannic bite. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's two parts Roagna Dolcetto and one part Cayron Gigondas. A lovely pairing to lamb rib chops and garlicky baby potatoes. — 9 years ago
The best barbaresco I've tasted. — 9 years ago
I need more of this in my life. — 10 years ago
Loads of Christmas spice and east going down!

Surprisingly light for a Nebbiolo, tart fruit, great on its own but especially with food — 11 years ago
A random purchase and what a surprise. — 11 years ago
Very pretty nose of rosé petal red cherry and black spice a very dry and tannic with pretty exotic spice and lots of fruit but needs time. Most excellent — 12 years ago
With some extra breathing time this decanted bottle proved to be fantastic and still lively — 9 years ago
Showing fat and unctuous, but missing a but of detail and length. Still really nice. — 9 years ago
Dynamite nose with lovely nuance but just a tad reticent on the palate, a bit clipped on the finish. Delightful nonetheless. The 2004. — 10 years ago
I'm surprised by pro rating because I really enjoyed the wine after waiting it breathe. Great price too — 10 years ago
Lightly textured and finessed. Barolo made by a Barbaresco specialist. — 11 years ago
