Off vintage and still stunning — 9 years ago
Austria's icon and finest wine producer - FX Pichler. One of the top wineries in Austria, specifically located in the Wachau Valley. The winery itself was created on 1898. Of the 18 hectares owned by a family, almost a half are planted to Riesling, the rest is almost entirely Grüner Veltliner.
The wine:
Riesling Federspiel Loibner Burgstall
This wine is strong and clear, fruit-driven Riesling with mineral notes. Love it. — 9 years ago
Electric gruner. So vibrant and sharply cutting it's almost rieslingesque, with the gruner character showing not so much in its tone or shape but rather in the whole garden of spring flora blooming around the fruit. So evocative I feel like I need to go on a bender of bullshit tasting note descriptors to do justice to all the outdoorsy freshness here. Hibiscus! Water lillies! Lilacs! I don't know if I have ever smelled these things but I am going with them anyway because they're euphonious enough and the imagery sounds right. — 10 years ago
Still drinking really well. — 11 years ago
2003 - Cara cara creamsical and waxy texture. 100% in tact and put together, but drink now. — 11 years ago
Rich, bright and delicious... Excellent Grüner — 11 years ago
Lovely, lighter and conversational, violets with blueberry skin, a hint of pepper and slightly under ripe cassis. — 13 years ago
Very nice with a hint of pepper and nice mineral flavors. — 7 years ago
One of the most profound & satisfying gruner’s I’ve had. Notes of white pear, daffodils, green peas, white pepper, with floral and almost marzipan qualities all come together harmoniously & dance on the tongue & drives home with an intense mineral backbone. Beautiful. — 7 years ago

Thanks for sharing a taste. Dry with nice berry flavors. — 11 years ago
Really interesting SB. Flamboyant, exotic and tropical. Very rich. Perfect with pan sautéed scallops. — 12 years ago
Lemon citrus smell, nutty taste, creamy texture... yes and it is in Le Bernardin — 8 years ago

Precise, mineral, legumes, spice, great citrus and stone fruit character. — 10 years ago
2009 Wow. My ideal Riesling — 10 years ago
This is listed here as a riesling but it's actually a gruner veltliner, 2003 vintage, one of the rare times they did this if not the only. I would say nobody would be able to peg this as a 2003 but I gave a blind pour to Peter Weygandt and he nailed it. Regardless, it's luminously bright and bracing, textured like rough gothic stone with sharp angles and spires. With air the fruit gets fuller and fleshier, taking on more primary pear-like and banana flavors and clean aloe cream scents. — 10 years ago
Not as good as the 12, still a beautiful wine though. — 11 years ago
Beautiful deep aromas of beeswax with notes of ripe melon and candied ginger. Full, rich, creamy and slightly off-dry on the palate. Citrus and tropical fruit fill the mouth followed by deep, gripping minerality and a touch of spice. — 11 years ago
Darren Dittrich

Really nice balance of citrus, mineral, and sweetness. This is a dry wine, but for the sugar-averse, there’s a little r/s here. Paired perfectly with our veggie-based stew and handled pork meatballs as well. Easy to drink, low alc. Hard not to love this wine. SommSelect — 6 years ago
