Old school...talk about label wear!
"1989...the number, another summer...get down...
Sound of the funky drummer!"
Still in the driver seat, this is gorgeous and yes it's old but the wine blossomed after 30 minutes and now at 2 hours open its singing and going strong.
1989 Joseph Phelps "Insignia", Napa Valley
Ruby-garnet edges, a deep core of red color.
The nose started out super funky, but blew off to a nose of mature cedar, forest floor, dried red cherry and cassis. The palate is old, but like the nose gained strength with air, it gained depth and concentration. Mulled spices, red fruits, plum, cedar and red fruit skin.

Crisp and tart, interesting enough to have alone as dessert with a little dark chocolate. My favorite rose so far — 8 years ago
For the price it was great. — 8 years ago
Popped 1 of my 3 bottles to celebrate two friends turning 50 at Factory Kitchen. 50 year old California Cab with finesse, balance, and though I wouldn't expect it to improve over time, it was fantastic and quintessential old school cab from without a doubt one of my favorite California producers. Just lovely! — 8 years ago
Old school as they come! This reserva is a benchmark for those wanting to hone in on Rioja. 10 years of aging has muted the fruit of sour cherry and pomegranate skins and secondary aromas are dominant with cedar, coconut flan and dill. — 9 years ago
Challis Lane was smooth and refined. Great for the price! — 10 years ago
Dark fruit spectrum. Herbal and spice. Earth is developing nicely. Lively acidity and velvet tannins provide a lush and generous finish. — 6 years ago
Wow. This is young, and the nose is a bit of dark red berry suffusing a sea of resolving American Oak. The American oak is so pronounced that, had I tasted this blind, I might have taken it for Ridge... :) This has decades ahead, even if -only- a Riserva. Like La Rioja Alta 904, a fantastic value in old school Rioja... — 7 years ago
Philip Togni has been making wine the old school way on Spring Mountain for many years. Working the Napa / Sonoma wineries since the 60's. Lower in alcohol but very balanced. Tradition means a lot, and pride in product shows in their amazing wines. — 7 years ago
Old school - charming - took a moment to show — 8 years ago
Textbook Brunello. Beautiful, elegant, old school style — 8 years ago
This is indeed quite a lovely old school rioja, the nose awash with savoury leafy tones, tobacco and warm earth, dried plums and unfortunately the coconut dill of american wood....very refined palate, mid-sized, fluent and sweet n sour throughout, delicious peat moss and mud tones, plenty of dried fruit, however a creaminess to the texture and a splash of cedar on the finish detracts from its otherwise unmistakable beauty. I just can't help but feel this would be so much better without the american oak. I can only wait for the day all top riojan wines cast aside the shadow of their past, and believe wholesomely in the grandeur of their unique terroir. — 9 years ago
The goods. — 9 years ago
In a great drinking window now with an easy 5 more years to go. Old school aromas and flavors of stems, peppercorns, meat, and crushed blueberries with a good old school funk. #pegau #chateuneuf — 10 years ago
Really good Zin. Went perfect with grilled food. — 6 years ago
Beautiful old school cab.....perfectly balanced, velvety smooth — 6 years ago
Stunning 90% Sangiovese! Not a super tuscan like many other reviews tell you! This is an awesome old school producer who bailed out of the Italian system. Hence he cannot call his wines Chianti. Very elegant and plenty of cherry 🍒 notes left. To bad it cost so much. From Max Kogod in North San Diego county. — 7 years ago
Old school Napa Cab at its best in the hand of Steve Matthiasson. — 7 years ago
Wonderful Evening I smoked steaks so we could drink this Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 by Old School Lane Cellars. Elegantly Delightful. — 7 years ago

2004 vintage. From Jay. 2004 Bartolo Mascarello - Brief Note from Galloni Historical Retrospective Held in London April 26, 2016. Dark ruby colour. Fresh violets on the nose together with cherries. A little tobacco wrapper. Cracked cloves. Nice fruit on the pallet and very silky. This is both elegant and old school in all the right ways. 92+/100. Drink 2017 to 2028+ — 8 years ago
