— 11 years ago

Novelty Hill borrows from the ancient Latin phrase In Novale Novello, “in virgin ground I plant young vines,” for its name. I didn’t realize that there aren’t vines on the actual Novelty Hill in Washington (located about 5 miles east of Redmond). Oh well, so much for my Hill vs Hill face-off with Pritchard Hill’s Bryant Family. This 2014 Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon talks some serious smack, and even brings a serious punch, but that would have been Go-Karts vs Formula One. That said, this is one hell of a Go-Kart. In the low $20s, my first comparison is to Charles Smith’s Substance Cs, and this blows the doors off that wine, and more than justifies its slightly higher price-point. Jumps out of the glass with black cherry, cassis, mocha, licorice, and a heavily spiced cranberry potpourri, while still managing to weave in a savory undertone that emphasizes the noticeable balance. Washington offers extraordinary value across the board, but this is a value even by Washington standards. 92+ — 6 years ago
More evolution than I expected. Still sound but perhaps better a year ago. Barolo Lecinquevigne is a blend of Nebbiolo from five vineyards; Barolo, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello. Sweet strawberries, orange notes, roses, leather, tobacco, and subtle hints of violets and tar. Nice pair with Cari's lasagna. — 8 years ago

Un novello buonissimo! — 10 years ago
More from Piedmonte trip. Yes Sauv Blanc from Novello?? So frickin good and visiting with Romy & Peter the highlight of the trip. Eating, drinking beautiful wines and listening to everything from Zappa to Pablo Casals Bach suites, doesn't get much better than that. Their Barbara and Nebbiolo (Torbido) are world class wines. — 11 years ago

Long mazeration (30-50 days) & vinification in 30hl barrels (austrian wood). The 2013 "Capalot - Vecchie Viti" seems pretty atypical compared with "classic" La Morra Baroli; I would have placed it either in Monforte or Novello. It comes rather earthy, balsamic and with a beautiful deep minerality. Dark fruit (cherry), iron, chalk, and dark-red roses, that give the wine still a lovely feminine touch. The tannins are very present, but silky and nobili. The vinification in big barrels is a terrific idea in order not to cover the very giving character of the fruit/flavors provided by the 'vecchie viti' in Burzi's "Capalot" vineyard.. In short I say: Kudos to Burzi! This is a stunner - and I can't wait too see this juice age and try it again with like age 10.
Producer info: Alberto Burzi is a quite young and "new" winemaker in La Morra and the Barolo area. 2013 is his second vintage. He makes two Baroli ("Capalot - Vecchie Viti" and a "base" one with fruit from "Rive", "Roncaglie" and "Rocchettevino", all La Morra. He also has a plot in "La Serra" which is supposed to be put in the Barolo "base" in the future; furthermore he makes a Langhe Nebbiolo "Runcaja" and and a Barbera d'Alba" Plaustra"). Burzi has a total of 7ha of land; 5ha are for Nebbiolo/Barolo. Ca. 20'000 bottles produced, of which 8'000 Barolo. — 6 years ago
This blend of 1 Cru from Barolo and 1 from Novello, 1 Serralunga and 1 Castillo Falletto is always my favorite from this house. Showing great with potential to continue to evolve. — 7 years ago
