Les Vieux Clos Savennières Chenin Blanc 2022

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three hours. The 2022 “Les Vieux Clos” pours a light golden color with medium+ viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with white tree flowers, mandarine oranges, ginger, lanolin and just a touch mousy. On the palate, the wine is slightly off-dry with high acid that’s balanced by the unquestionable quality of the fruit. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, wooly and rich. The alcohol is medium+ but should be at all be surprised? Say what you want about Joly’s methods; his wines are never boring. I, for one, adore them. Drink now through 2032 easy. — 3 months ago

I’ve never had a Joly that was not too oxidative for me. Sounds like it would have liked this one.

Domaine de Bellivière (Eric Nicolas)

L'Effraie Coteaux du Loir Chenin Blanc 2018

Medium deep lemon yellow , touch of gold . Quite ripe citrus fruits , orange rind , peach , ripe rear, , honey . On the palate quite rich and round with a judicious amount of residual sugar , just balanced acidity and with the citrus , honied orange rind , peach notes from nose. Slightly heavy alcohol , quite intense with ok honied length . Misses a little freshness perhaps but should age quite well , possibly more interesting and less one dimensional in a few years . Drinkable now but will last well a further 10 years . — 4 months ago

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières Chenin Blanc 2020

This remains one of the greatest white dry wines of France although probably not for everybody. Every year is a surprise and that inconsistency can be off-putting. Golden color, medium weight, quite high in alcohol (14.5) and cloudy. Long burn, apricot, dried raisins, apple and pineapple. — 6 months ago

Really bold off the hop, then leans into black cherry and aged cheese. Slightly purple tongue. Consistent throughout the bottle - really great. — 7 months ago

St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes Cabernet Franc 2020

Was so surprised at this one! Got it for a friend who loves Cab but is going to the Loire Valley and I wanted to show her a good expression of the reds from that region. Was delicious - easy to drink on its own or with food. Already bought a second bottle! $22. — 3 months ago

Bodega Catena Zapata

Nicolas Catena Zapata Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2020

Medium ruby hue. Pronounced aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, earthy, licorice, and pepper. Plus body, plus acid, plus tannins. Hints of oak and pepper on the palate, with grippy tannins. Medium-length finish. Elegant and balanced. 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 21% Malbec. — 4 months ago

Chevret Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2012

This is a dark and brooding Volnay. Has a a bit of a creamy note with the compact dark fruits. A good match with roast duck. — 7 months ago

Rouge-Gorge Coteaux Du Loir Pineau d'Aunis 2020

One of my favorite red wines. Never disappointed. White pepper, plum, tart blackberry, stone, cherry, hint of green wood. It is so good with and gets better with some air. — 7 months ago

Clos de la Bergerie Savennières Roche aux Moines Chenin Blanc 2016

Outstanding, showing primary and tertiary 50/50, lovely yellow and white fruits, salinity, some oxygen taking hold, florals, lanolin, and excellent acidity drives this into a long, complex finish. — 3 months ago

Nice wine for $20. Cherry fruit and some healthy tannins, but relatively light. Nice with turkey; would be good with a lot of foods — a year ago
