Medium, spicy, full body — 5 months ago
This is a BIG Pinot. Big, fruit dominated nose, with a little herbal spice on the back end, with hints of black olive and rose permeating throughout. Big palate and body, with an herbal, hay or thyme palate, tannic, with a salinity that’s prominent, with black olive, some tar, and even a smokiness hitting the end, with dark cherry, plum, and a peppery spice showing up loud on the palate. Really good entry to South African Pinot. — 9 months ago
Paired well with a lamb, eggplant purée, fava beans, piquolo pepper. Would also pair with a medium rare magret duck or other game. — 9 years ago
Always surprised by these wines. Incredible concentration and still lively. — 10 years ago
Never had a Marlborough Pinot before. Was having duck, so Pinot an obvious choice. Loved this. Light, which is what I was after, and slight fruity. — 3 months ago

Imagine a great Cote Rotie, Cornas, and a Cal Syrah step into a bar. The atmosphere is all French but the ‘Mercian makes it interesting and overblown with too much density. It was spectacular, but if it were a bit more reserved, and didn’t stain my Riedel, it would have been on another level. — 5 months ago

The 2022 Evangelho Heritage blend by Bedrock is very light on its feet with a streak of bracing acidity — almost effervescence — along with light tannins. It’s a deep hazy purple in its youth with a nose of tart berry compote and leather. Seems like it will mature nicely. — 7 months ago
A rare dark berry color wine, well blended wine structure and with earth berry end taste that exposure it exquisite complexity of well done California wine. — 2 years ago

Cali Pinot Noir for the 4th: @RhysVineyards San Mateo — 10 years ago
Privileged to sample the 2016 Monte Bello at the winery as part of their Library offerings. The bottle is $375 at the winery. Tight and tannic after 8 years (and half an hour of decanting) but promising much more. Josh at the winery concedes that it’s in a dumb phase but should reach its peak in 20-30 years. I could analyze and pick apart this one for hours. — 4 months ago
At Ogino’s post Thanksgiving. Excellent ripe modern style but of old Zin. — 7 months ago
Delicious and fine. Nice balance and rich. — 6 months ago
Delightful but wow. High alcohol. Super fruit and robust — 7 months ago
Tasted the ‘13 vintage not long ago while it was fantastic I felt it just slightly passed its peak. This 15’ is in top form. Nice cherry fruit concentration and freshness on the nose. The palate is a bit richer than the nose suggests with dark plum and abundant earthy elements. Lingering mellow tannins.
Fruits from Wairau Valley. 12 months in French oak barrel, 35% new. — 7 months ago
Color of really light tea. Nose is a bomb of ripe and sweet citrus and lime, sprinkled with a bit mineral. Nose is decent. Taste is refreshing with sweet tropical fruit, some flowering note, a tiny bit nutty and warm from alcohol. Light on the acidity side. After taste shows some more rind to wrap things up. Perfect for hot summer. — 10 months ago

1985 vintage. Nice fill. Excellent cork. Decanted and tasted after 15 minutes thru the 1.5 hours it lasted. Very little sed. Plenty of color. Light-medium body but got bigger and more developed after 45 mins or so. Tobacco, earth and cedar in spades along with dark fruit. This has plenty of life remaining at a high level. Wonderful stuff. 3.24.24. — 3 months ago
