This is one of those that needs to sit for a while to open up. But once it does it is a superb Pinot. Spices and cherries greet you upon opening. I got some red fruit and licorice upon the first sip. However others disagreed with me. But it is my post so I am going with mine. The acid was not too high for me and let this finish nicely. This is an elegant glass of wine and one to enjoy with friends. — 7 years ago
I'm disappointed with how narrow this bottle's hole is because I want to bang this wine — 9 years ago
RIP to the late Zlatan who passed a month ago.
Zlatan Otok is one of my favourite wineries in Croatia. I appreciate every single one of the wines that I've tried but that said, this Zlatan Otok 2010 Crljenak is my absolute fave.
In 2001 a research, funded by Mike Grgich of Judgement of Paris fame, on the origin of Zinfandel came to fruition. It confirmed that Zinfandel and Primitivo came from Croatia. Unfortunately at the point of discovery, the vines of Crljenak in Croatia was near extinction. Today, only a handful of Croatian wineries still produce this wine. As far as I've tried, the Zlatan Otok 2010 Crljenak is the best representation of this variety.
Notes: Colour is dark garnet with some clarity. On the nose, I get cboth red and black fruit, white and black pepper, slightly perfumey like amber and musk. The palate reflects exactly what's on the nose, carried off by vibrant acidity and prominent minerality. Tannins are slightly coarse but sweet, which means it should be aged in the bottle for a while longer but ready to be enjoyed now. What I love most is how it opens up and expresses itself on the palate like a triangle--from narrow and shy to wide and lively. This Crljenak has lighter body than most Californian Zinfandel.
The final conclusion: Yes please! It's slightly cheaper than Lytton Springs, and I'm getting more pleasure from this. — 9 years ago
One of my go to Jammy Zins. For the price point a great wine. — 9 years ago

Yummy with steak — 12 years ago
What a gem! Opened and decanted into a bottle with a narrow opening to keep from aerating too quickly. Nose had tobacco, leather and earth. Palate had all that and a little mint, anise and herbs. Beautiful red color, clean and clear. Enjoyed with the tail-end of an uni pasta special, and with shared lamb (with fresh mint, morels, and asparagus) and with roast suckling pig. Evolved during the course of two hours or so. — 7 years ago
A treat, paired with Colorado beef tenderloin, wilted chard, mushrooms, and parsnip purée. Big, brash tannins that stood up to the charred edges of the steak. A lot of dark fruit with a touch of (good) funk. Off the beaten path for sure...need to go find some more — 7 years ago
2014 Puissant et rond 2 bouteilles pour $30 à bevmo — 8 years ago
This is another example of how 2010 makes all things good. The decanter is too narrow (at a restaurant) so surface area is small. It needs a bit more softening. The nose is full of holiday spice-- nutmeg clove cinnamon. Taste is not as round. Solid not spectacular.

Lovely off the path wine. Nice freshness... — 9 years ago
Clear, pale and lemon in colour. Medium (+) intensity of delicious aromas that are unwilling to remain complacent as the wine sits in the glass. First opened up to fresh and brandied apricot being the sweeter note amongst some ripe citrus and green apple. Its developed into a nose of tangy lemon starburst, honeysuckle, orange blossom, some exotic tropical fruits and some feint slate-like character. Plenty of zippy, spritzy acid adding a little bit to a medium body. The palate is dry despite being lead down a potential off-dry path expressing its citrus qualities. Longer than medium finish, probably drank a little young. 3-5 more years and she'll be a peach 👌 — 10 years ago
Great fullness of red with a bit of sweetness.

Good job James! Off the beaten path but delicious. I don't normally gravitate towards wine with minerals but this one was nice. — 7 years ago

Absolutely great with a terrific Italian dinner! — 8 years ago
Hugely aromatic. On the nose a lovely sweaty leather cowboy hat with tobacco smoke. On the palette wild mushrooms growing along wet stone gravel shaded path with green moss. Perfect color. Nice acidity balance. Medium body. Medium plus finish. Special. — 9 years ago
It pains me that I can not share these German Pinots with my American friends😭😭😭😭😵😪😪😪. Really nice. Close to the 2008 I reviewed yesterday. Black currents and blackberries. Cherry and YERY powerfully elderberry characteristics another winner from this off the beating path winery. Really very aromatic and unique this would blows your socks off! 30 Euros. — 9 years ago
