Wonderful old Muskat-Ottonel from Somló (Pieroth bottling). Golden with streaks of Amber; strong scents of candied pineapple, orange zest, mango (skin, flesh, and stone), with hints of pear brandy, marzipan, and honey blossom; well balanced sweetness and acidity but lacking a bit of a backbone (like a sweetish auslese). Still, it's keeping remarkably well. Will probably run for a few decades more before it starts diving! — 10 years ago
From an obscure, nearly extinct grape variety, Juhfark translated literally means "sheep's tail" so named because tightly clustered bunches have a distinctive curve at the tip. Found only in the Somló region of Hungary, this non-aromatic variety is typically aged in large oak barriques. Meyer lemon zest, cling peaches, chamomile, and white flowers round out the nose. It's a broad-shouldered white with a coursing vein of acidity, along with a mineral upwelling that showcases an ashy, volcanic soil type. Sample — 10 years ago

Aromatic, austere fruit and dry as a bone, reminds me of a Santorini Assyrtiko except perhaps a touch mineral. Good stuff. — 10 years ago
Juhfark from the Somló area of Balaton, this delightful floral white has nice acidity, honey on the nose and palate, good minerality -- reminds me of wet white marble. Reminiscent of an Italian Falanghina or Fiano. — 10 years ago
Slightly oxidative, more savory, more body. $15 in Cluj. — 10 years ago
