Blend of 74% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 9% Carignane & 2% Mataro, aged in 100% air-dried American oak (10% new). Deep Ruby color with aromas of berry fruits, tobacco and earthy spices. On the palate flavors of blackberry and cherry with black pepper, tobacco, citrus spice and a touch of earthy herbs. Fine grainy tannins, long finish ending with fruit, earthy spice and some cedar. Big and muscular, but I wouldn’t call it jammy or a fruit bomb. Maybe the mataro mellowed it a bit? I like Aussie Shiraz, and Penfolds is usually very good ( as was this). Big plum/ cherry action. Thanks bro. — 4 years ago

Oh snap! My first time trying one of the 2017 Mataro’s from Sandlands and this San Benito County is fantastic! Beautiful, pure, fresh plums and other dark cherry with black pepper and other spices. It has an almost ferrous characteristic about it that I find quite charming. Lots of tannin and acid so let this be a note to those who are holding these in their cellar: just wait. This should be killer by 2022 but it’s already pretty exciting to drink. — 6 years ago
