Reserve Virginia Cabernet Franc 2008

Fine example of a Virginia Cab Franc. Drank great right out of the bottle without decanting. Plenty of fruit still present and nice balance. Was wonderful with grilled chicken marsala. — 10 years ago

First time for me - 100% Grillo. Green almonds and hazlenuts immediately transported me back to being at seppeltsfield tasting show reserves from the early 1900s. Stunning. — 10 years ago

Forget contemporary Marsala. Here is the closest, modern relative of the ancestral wine made in Marsala wine region, the Perpetuum. Stellar. — 12 years ago

Ridge Vineyards

Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend 2010

A brilliantly structured, balanced and complex zin blend, and consistently one our favorites. This year it shows a nose of boysenberry punch with a hint of spice, and a palate of dark berries that started out with some raisins (in a GOOD dried fruit way) that developed into more blackberries. Still showing firm but balanced tannins and acidity, this wine paired beautifully with meatballs Marsala over garlic mashed potatoes and roasted balsamic asparagus. — 9 years ago

Marsala Baglio Florio Grillo 1994

Golden amber color, medium body, smells of toffee, dried orange peel, walnut, dried apricot, dried fig, white balsamic and caramel, medium body and very smooth mouthfeel, smells like a very sweet wine but it is not, tastes between a manzanilla to oloroso sherry, very complex tasting profile, smooth long finish with an amaretto like bitter aftertaste and then a slight hint of sweetness similar to having a biscotti. — 11 years ago

SOM it's one of the old appellations of Marsala Superiore and stays for "Superiore Old Marsala". Others: LP (London Particular), GD (Garibaldi Dolce). Marsala Fine could be also completed with IP (Italia Particolare).

Marsala Vecchio Samperi Riserva 30 Anni Solera Grillo

Holy shit. Amazing acidity still at the core with deep amber toffee, bananas foster for miles & miles on the nose. Palette was that killer acidity with saline on the edge. Ruch nuttiness throughout. Steller. — 9 years ago

Il Censo

Praruar Terre Siciliane Catarratto

A very elegant charmer of an orange wine. Cattaratto is the racy component of Marsala (Grillo is the phat cat purring in the sunshine...), and this jets into terra incognita with aplomb, showing tricks with acidity, a bit of residual sugar that honeys like apricots, and just a kiss of tawny tannin structure. This could roll with anything from lamb curry to caponata to hamachi collar in a miso glaze.... — 10 years ago

Esperienze Venezia Giulia Red Blend 1988

Venezia Giulia IGT 1988, 10%. Bottle tasted in November 2014.
Unusual!
Unexpected!
Unforgettable!
There is oxidation in the wine, so the color is a very dark copper green. The nose detects candied fruits, dates, Marsala.
In the mouth is quite extraordinary (it was my first taste of such wine), rich and persistent, with acidity, and an aftertaste of toasted peanuts.
