Scents was started of vanilla, butter toast, red lily, rose, and cherry. Then spicy nuance of cinnamon, chocolate, ink and black pepper made it complex and exotic.

The flagship wine from Burn Cottage, a Central Otago, New Zealand producer focused on Pinot Noir. Husband and wife owners Dianne & Marquis Sauvage sought out Ted Lemon of Littorai, and SF Chronicle's winemaker of the year for 2010 (Jon Bonné: "The simple version of Ted Lemon's story: Young American goes to Burgundy. Becomes first American to run a Burgundian wine estate. Comes back and stays true to Pinot's motherland."). Lemon oversaw the planting of the vineyards, along with all aspects of vineyard management and winemaking, chief of which being Biodynamic from inception. The label is a derivative of a 1795 fairy tale called “The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily” which represents the ideal intersection of people and the land reflected in Biodynamics. Really impressed with this wine. For the vintage (2010) it was remarkably dark and rich but it has so much more than just raw power. The attack note on the nose is that unmistakable Oregon Pinot "funk" that's sort of a blend of lily flower and inner tube rubber. Actually, there's so many different sorts of rich flower notes, it's a bit like that smell of walking in to a florist's shop. Mouthfeel is softly gripping and the acid on the back end really gets the mouth watering.
Later, some licorice notes come out and maybe even a little cola.
All in all very complex, interesting and thought provoking. Still plenty of life left in that bottle. Recommended. — 9 years ago
