2016 Hensell Rose by Kuhlman. New release. Lots of bright acidity. Young strawberry, some watermelmon, citrus, and minerality, in the middle and finish. Crisp. Damn fine for a day like today. Winemaker from Provence France. 100% Mourvedre Rose, and absolutely beautiful wine for a day like today. — 8 years ago
Gypsum, a cuvee of 44 percent Cincaut, 44 percent Aglianico, and 12 percent tempranillo....and 100 percent enjoyable with chicken soup on a colder evening. Wildflower and red berry nose with a hint of tobacco, bell pepper, and youthful raspberry front with herbal middle and acidic drunken earthy red berry finish. One of the few Texas producers who knows how to make solid wines from TX grapes. — 8 years ago
OK, so the first one of the new vintage went down tonight! And, dare I say that I think that this one is going to hold just as well as the 2015. I still need to take one of these to the lockup. This seems to be a more acidic Viognier than the 2015. Mouthfeel on entry is thicker than the wine evolves to be. First is a lot of mango and a hint of kiwi, and ends with more acidic citrus notes with a hint of honeysuckle. Bought slightly more of this than the Roussanne. Haven't had any of that yet, but soon! — 8 years ago
Cellartracker was quite harsh on this one, because someone gave it an 85. On the last trip to Fredericksburg, we discovered the existence of this wine and were able to taste the 15 and 16 Rose wines side by side. This one was the clear victor. Strawberry and rose petals on the nose. The entry is strawberry crush and a Rose petal perfume out of the glass. Medium density. Great acidity. The middle of this wine goes to an herbal hearthiness with a great limestone and mineral grit, with excellent long finish. The 16 by comparison tends to have a lot more citrus and pink grapefruit with higher acidity. Still pretty damn good but this seems to be typical for 16 TX Rose across the board except for Kuhlman. Compared to a lot of Roussanne offerings on the Texas wine Trail, this one is Roussanne Elite. To get more specific, compared to the Kuhlman Roussanne, this one is enjoyable but not there as the "go-to." Now the 2012 Newsom Merlot...OK, back on track with this Roussanne. The wine starts off with a very nice lemon and citrus front. Acidity is sharp, although not as sharp as the Chenin they also offer. The awesome part about this wine is what is does in the middle and finish, where it thickens up, has a great number of serendipitous notes from citrus to melon to floral all kind of pop in and tickle your tongue. Finish is quite velvety, yet still maintains a subdued acidity. Really nice, and probably top 10 white wine from the Tx Wine Trail. — 8 years ago
This is my favorite of red wines that they have produced. Dark, jammy cinnamon fruit cake backbone. Petite Sirah is very present. Lots of dark Blackberry, spice, hint of Ash. Full-bodied wine. French wine maker with amazing talents doing great things with Texas grapes. Cheers! — 8 years ago
Just great fruit presence, hints of oak,......balance, balance, balance. Nice showing. Kuhlman is the real deal and will be at the top tier of Texas wineries for years to come. — 10 years ago
