Cayuse Vineyards

Bionic Frog Walla Walla Valley Syrah

Color - dark purple garnet. A bold expressive funky perfume fruit nose so classic of Cayuse with mineral-meat, smokey and mint notes lingering with a vanilla toast scent. Juicy and elegant; rich with dark plum-cherry flavors intertwined with a smokey soil bacon bitters taste—the mineral-iron characteristics follow with a tobacco long finish. Looking forward to seeing how the flavors change with different foods and as the wine opens up. Bionic Frog is favorite and definitely a wine to try and store in your cellar. Horsepower Syrahs are the only ones I’ve had with more funk than Cayuse.

Grand Estates Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Medium purple color with a nose of blackberries, vanilla, and oak. A simple straightforward wine that performs well on the one dimension it is playing. Medium bodied, well balanced, with a good finish. Picked up at a warehouse club for $7, but drinks like $15. — 8 years ago

Eroica Columbia Valley Riesling 2013

Right on the money with this Riesling! Straw in color and star bright. Nose was filled with lemon-lime, honeydew, Granny Smith apples, wild honey, citrus blossom, ginger, and new plastic pool toy aromas. The palate was extremely well balanced and the acidity was high and puckering. The tart lemon and lime flavors held through the finish. The finish was surprisingly long, and it was a nice medium-minus body. This Riesling provides a solid compliment to spicy sushi and spicy foods. It holds up strong and has a lot of backbone. All in all, this is your Riesling if you are looking for a refreshing, acidic, dry breath of fresh air. Instant favorite of mine! Washington dry Rieslings are spectacular. Cheers! — 9 years ago

Southern Blend Washington State Grenache Blend 2014

Starting to soften just slightly and drinks well now with a short decant. Bright red fruits from the grenache, some darker and more savory elements from the mourvedre and just a touch of syrah which I can’t pick out on the palate but makes for a nice bouquet. — 6 years ago

Columbia Valley Syrah 2015

Color of many shades of purple, with gray hue on the rim. Nice legs. Nose of wet mushroom, violet, strawberry, savory spice, raspberry, strength of alcohol, and a bit leather. Nose is fragrant. Taste follows the nose, silky and warm, lot of raspberry, a bit peppery, flowering note, and slightly sweet. Taste is clean, in harmony, and well balanced. Aftertaste is medium long and savory. A beauty. — 4 years ago

Canvasback (Duckhorn Vineyards)

Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

I’m always down for a bottle of Canvasback as I find it to be consistently good. I enjoy the robust, ripe red & black fruits, the notes of cedar and wood shavings, menthol and baking spices, and the seductively sweet notes of burnt brown sugar, molasses, and Luxardo syrup. While it’s on the higher end of the price I consider reasonable for this selection, it’s still agreeable in my opinion. — 6 years ago

En Chamberlin Vineyard Syrah 2003

Bought six each of the ‘99 Walla Walla and ‘03 En Chamberlain at auction a few years ago. The WW has seriously over-performed, while the EC’s seemed overripe and perhaps even slightly cooked...until bottle five. Pulled this bottle with the expectation of tasting and perhaps dumping and moving on. Cork was pristine and first sniff stopped me in my tracks. Everything I had hoped for in previous bottles was here- mild to moderate Cayuse funk of wet fur, sumptuous dark fruit, and a nice minerality. Beautiful Syrah. Fingers crossed for bottle six. — 6 years ago

Sleight Of Hand Cellars

The Conjurer Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

Somm David T
9.3

Yup...that's Neil Patrick Harris on their Label. Sleight of Hand Cellars got involved in a charity that NPH was apart. They got to talking and found he not only had a love of Magic, but wine as well. The relationship evolved well enough, they asked him if he would be on one of their labels and Neil agreed. The "Sleight of Hand Cellars" label has been seen a few times on "How I Met Your Mother." NPH is also is a club member. The Conjurer is blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot from the Columbia Valley. Nice, fresh nose of; ripe dark currants, blackberries, black plum, dark cherries, black raspberries, black licorice, dark chocolate, soft spice, wood shavings and fresh dark florals. The palate is M+ body & soft M+ tannins with a thick, round mouthfeel. Dark spice, eucalyptus, mint, herb notes, cinnamon, vanilla, clove, chocolate, caramel apple, black licorice, crushed rocks, soft leather, nice, round, acidity and a very well polish finish. This is very easy to drink young and will cellar 10 years. — 8 years ago
