The inky black/garnet '11 Tobin James Lagrein 'Silver Reserve' is a new varietal for me. This Italian grape is quite Syrah-like with concentrated dried plum, blackberry, black tea and spice box aromas. Rich and chewy with a nice dollop of sweet oak on the mid-palate. Medium finish with lingering dark fruit on the back end. Looking forward to my next bottle. — 9 years ago

This is such a smooth and delicious Pinot noir . You can taste subtle fruit . Really could just so sip this wine . Reasonably priced at about $12 — 11 years ago
Delicious Jammy Berries, blackberry, spice, wood, vanilla, what a nice nose after sitting in the glass for a while. — 5 years ago
Always a winner. The Tobin version of a Bordeaux. 5 grapes, all delicious. Combine them together for a masterpiece. A great bottle. — 6 years ago
Decent Pinot. Not great. — 7 years ago
With rain clouds approaching and an autumn chill in the air, it was time to roast beef and dig out something delicious from my collection. I was curious to see how a Malbec would age and am happy to report that this one did very well. Big lush fruit with sweet tannins providing elegant structure and a long finish. — 8 years ago
Bready, yeasty goodness. — 9 years ago

This a big boy no holds bard Syrah dominated blend from JS. What blows me away about this very talented young super star winemaker is he truly adapts his wine making style to the vintage. Each year is unique with its own optimized signature. This wine is a big brooding effort in which dark cherry, black plum and sweet tobacco dominate. There are cloves and cinnamon on the long drawn out finish. The tannins are formidable and this will benefit from another couple years in the bottle. Give it at least an hour in the decanter if u drink it now. This wine continues to evolve in my glass. Such a talented wine maker, I'm sorry I just discovered this producer only recently. His 2007 James berry vineyard is the only wine I have ever tasted that I consider perfection. — 10 years ago
Stunning. Slight oxidative note blew off after a quick decant. buttery. Tropical fruit and apricot. Waxy texture. Enough acid still there to keep the finish going and going. — 4 years ago
Black cherry, vanilla, licorice, oak, blackberry, raspberry and eucalyptus. Great structure and moderate tannins. — 5 years ago
2010 vintage. Great wine, albeit $55. Got in the 2013 club shipment. Complex and smooth. 15% abv. Glad I saved it and am pretty impressed! — 7 years ago
Must decant/air for 3+ hrs.
Opens up to a sumptuous wine. Dark plum coloured. Earthen nose. Leather, must, dried violets but with subtle blue berries. Fantastic mouth feel. New world with forward fruits heavy and rich. Vanilla, licorice and cola. Medium plus tannins. Would not pair with rich meat or steak. Hard and semi-hard cheese should be good. — 7 years ago
Love what Pax has done over the years. I have a few bottles of his 2003 Griffins Layer... It's a beautiful wine that is probably mind-blowing at this point; however, this wine shows restraint, refinement and a sense of place. Looking forward to owning a bottle in a few years. — 8 years ago
