Kick Ranch Vineyards Home Run Cuvée Grenache Blend 2013

Ming L
9.3

The 2010 Esprit de Beaucastel from Tablas Creek was a tough act to follow, but this elegant Rhône blend from Sonoma just did that.

The nose was quite similar with aroma of blue fruits and earthy elements with hint of violet, it was the palate that set it apart: soft, complex and deep, with great texture and beautiful acidity that adds the tension. Elegant and seamless.

Kale Anderson was the long time wine maker at Pahlmeyer, and Kale wines are all vineyard-specific. Worth seeking out.

The Falstaff Napa Valley Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Lighter on the palate than the nose; nice surprise. Smooth and light. Like coppa - soft, melts in your mouth, not bitter, a little buttery and very slightly sweet with a hint of herbal notes. Enjoyable with pasta and pesto dinner at home. — 8 years ago

@Bill Bender - not an'84 but something I thought would pair well with the first half of an 11-course tasting menu. So far through course 6, Home Run. A hint of sweet, a ton of savory, minerality and lemon. Great pairing. — 8 years ago

Forgot to post a few bottles. This was opened at Spruce in SF Cali the day before our return flight home😞. Alas., all great things must come to an end! Incredible Napa trip.
This 100 point bottle of Napa's best was a great way to say goodbye. Stunning bottle of wine!

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay

Big and rich Chardonnay still oak notes after 11 years. Hazelnut and caramel corn. Still has minerality present few years of life left (like my cat except more teeth). Granted I could come home any day now to find wine or cat dead but the future looks bright for both. — 11 years ago

A solid champagne that is in “the middle” in a lot of ways. Medium acid, medium yeast, etc. Balanced, but I probably prefer something that expresses one end of the spectrum a bit more. Still nice. — 7 years ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Friday night and I had a taste for a Bordeaux, so I stopped on my way home and picked up the 2014 Château Léoville Barton from Saint-Julien. A beautiful expression of a classical Left Bank Bordeaux Blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

The nose reveals beautiful dark fruit of black raspberry, black cherry, black plum, black currant, a touch of strawberry, graphite, mocha, vanilla, clove and an earthy component.

On the palate you have sweet dark fruit that is beautifully rounded that continues through with black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, plum, licorice, a herbal note and some rich earth.

The wine is medium to full bodied with a racey medium + acidity and medium + chewy tannins that leads right into a long fruit filled finish. A nice wine that has a lot of years ahead of it if you would like to cellar this gem. Now this is definitely how I like to start my weekend off right. Have a safe an enjoyable weekend. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Arkenstone

Estate Howell Mountain Sauvignon Blanc 2013

This arrived this morning on my way out, just got home & popped one.
Its good, but I prefer the Realm & Bevan especially since they are almost half the price. Picked the Realm up for $40.00 each for 12-14 3 bottle lot.
Bevan is $36.00 this Arkenstone was $60.00, most places around $70.00 not sure what the release price is.
This is a thinner more focused SB, I like thick & Viscous. Just personal preference
@Ellen Clifford please let me out of the trunk, the sun is finally coming out & my wine is starting to get a little warm.

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1999

I just found this for a ridiculous price at a sort of out of the way liquor store on my way home from the dentist. $60! Had to take a flier on it for that price. The wine is excellent. Darker than expected. Silky tannins with notes of sandalwood and tart cherry. Years of good drinking ahead on this one. — 9 years ago

Martinelli

Bondi Home Ranch "Water Trough Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2014

Nice little pinot but man these 2014 Martinelli Pinots could all use about 4-5 years of bottle aging! 1 of 4 brought with us on a little weekend getaway, and was a great accoutrement. Nice acidity, great raspberry grit and had an herbal nose and finish. Really pleased, and even more pleased that the rest are in the lockup where they belong for a few years. — 9 years ago

Home Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

Haven't had this since release. At the time it was impressively elegant compared to the outsized Alpines, but I think the Alpine special cuvees were the pride of the cellar this year and they got really impressive with a bit of age. Not sure this one has turned out to be at the same level. It is still nicely elegant but not offering much intrigue at the moment besides the fruit, which is in a sort of plummy stage showing some secondary development but not revealing any of the stony character that makes the Home so distinctive when it's on. — 10 years ago

Still seems youthful, with lots of ripe fruit leading the way. If there's a clue to its age, it's the way the oak has receded and integrated - still there, but not as present as in a younger Ridge wine. In a nice spot, could go for a while yet. — 11 years ago
