Smells a little like cotton candy and exhibits notes of cedar, clove, prune, cherry, red rose, eucalyptus with perceivable mint-traits. In another dimension this may be a cousin of Heitz's Martha's Vineyard. Awesome to have with bbq'd steak, garlic bread and knowing this is the only winery for this AVA ( just 20 miles south of where I got to imbibe this 400 case production of local goodness. ) — 9 years ago
So good. Old school mountain cab. Seamless. — 9 years ago
Outstanding Cab. Shows why 08 Cali cab is way more cellar worthy than 07. Blackberry, cassis, blueberry tootsie roll, if there is such a thing. Asian spice, cinnamon, nutmeg notes. Fine grained with excellent grip. Wish I had more — 10 years ago
Smells like the forest, tastes like cedar chips. — 10 years ago
Diamond Mountain Ranch — 11 years ago
Very smooth — 11 years ago
Smoky currants. Not a fruit bomb, more of a bottle rocket. — 12 years ago
Floral. Like beautiful mountain valley by the ocean blue sky floral — 9 years ago

On the nose, this Howell Mountain beauty has chocolate, spice and mint accents on a core of red and black fruit. The flavors are the same/similar, and the tannins are well-integrated and balanced perfectly with acid, fruit and alc (13.5% abv). Full-bodied with a great, silky texture. The finish is long and dry, with notes of chalk and raspberries. An awesome bottle, drinking well now but this wine will also age well. — 9 years ago
Should have aged this wine for a decade. Forest and ocean mist, limestone quality to the tannin structure. Excellent wine. — 9 years ago
As good as any Merlot in the world gets. These Bancroft ranch Merlots seem like they age beautifully for ever. — 10 years ago
Herbal. Floral. Drunk purchase from several years ago and no buyer's remorse here. Yummy. — 10 years ago
Still a big wine with great acid — 11 years ago
I had the 2000. — 11 years ago
Busted this bottle out a while back! Probably in my top 5 wines I have had in recent years. St. Ralph The Liar is a great name too! Dark Fruit for days!!! This was a great 2007 Howell Mountain! — 11 years ago
Everything I like about Grenache in one bottle - floral nose, berry fruit, spice, subtle tannins and some acidity for balance. A tiny bit dryer and it would be perfect. Winemaker's comments: 1/3 from old vines at McDowell Vineyard in Mendocino, 2/3 from younger vines at Pierce Ranch in SW Monterey. — 12 years ago
Really liked, more acidic and less oaky than the MacRostie Dutton Ranch, which I also really liked. — 9 years ago
Great zin. Totally different, thin, looked like Pinot — 9 years ago
This wine is killer. Everyone loves Napa Valley fruit... But Napa Mountain fruit?! Forget about it! Love the Howell mountain! The red fruit nose jumps out of the glass but then it shows its age mixing in spices: cocoa powder, cardamom, and tobacco. Delicious! — 10 years ago
Sweet, chocolate, vanilla. Smooth, never would have guessed Sangiovese! Really liked this. Blind — 11 years ago
Very bright and vibrant. Now is the time to drink — 11 years ago
This is just getting better and better — 11 years ago
