Bedlam Frederick County Viognier Blend 2015

2015. Probably the best MD has to offer and they continue to get better. There are too many yellow jackets here. — 7 years ago

Was unable to pull a vintage from the bottle or cork, but I'd date it mid-60's (post Frederick Wildman & Sons founding). Poured like molasses... — 8 years ago

Blue Pyrenees Estate

Midnight Cuvée Chardonnay 2010

Avoca -based maker Blue Pyrenees had a major triumph with this wine in a European fizz comp headed by Tom Stevenson; linear chardonnay with subtle yeast and contrite lemon length; unusual for a blanc de blancs to outscore the usual bigger pinot wines of Arras and Chandon; property estab 1963 by original Krug owners; picked under floodlight at night to achieve the higher night flow in acidity; AUD 35; 12%; expect long life in wine like this; exceptional flavour, few artifacts. — 9 years ago

Incredibly rich, complex, and layered, with wet wool, green hay, earthy bordering on fungal, but pure and precise. Fascinating, subtle interplay of oak. Elegantly textured but still racy. Continuously improves with air and as it approaches room temperature. At half the price of Corton-Charlemagne, I will take this any day.

Domaine Faiveley (Joseph Faiveley)

Mercurey Pinot Noir 2010

Imported by Frederick Wildman. Super light color. Gorgeous wine, tannins are very soft but the acid carries it structurally. Fruit, earth, spice living in harmony. If I were cool this would be my house wine. — 11 years ago

Pretty cool, these guys don't care about selling wine in the US - not only is "Pinot Noir" nowhere on the back label, there is not even a mention of Burgundy/Bourgogne anywhere.

A lot of people will find this wine a bit weak, but I contend it is delicious.

Vista Hills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

This is actually the Vista Hills Vineyard, known for tarry depths with a hint of licorice & fennel & almost a Mourvèdre sense of blueberries & smoke. A big bruiser at 14.8% but damn...it suits my mood for a contemplative late night sipper. — 8 years ago

Michael at Storyteller Wine included this in a mystery mixed case. The pleasure of this bottle far surpassed the monetary value of the average bottle price. Lovely delicacy of 2007 WV vintage conveyed. Slight graphite leading the dark fruit mixed with loam. So pretty — 12 years ago

California Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

If you sat down across from this wine at a speed dating event it would say, "I'm very forward with bundles of plum and dark berry that I can't wait to share with the right person. I'm a lot of fun to be around because I don't take myself too seriously and love to share my juicy personality. I get along great with everyone because I'm such a smooth operator and I've always had a spicy temper with notes of cinnamon and cayenne. To finish you should know I have a crisp refreshing wit and I dislike squirrels." WK Frederick, MD — 8 years ago
