Another wine from my mixed case of Finger Lakes wines. I’m really trying to get a sense of where the region is at right now in terms of quality and grape varietals. This single vineyard offering from Forge Cellars is definitely the best Pinot Noir I’ve had from the FLX region. It’s Burgundian in style with tart and tangy red fruits like raspberry and crabapple, baking spices, shale and freshly turned soil. You really get a sense of the terroir of the Liedenfrost Vineyard. The acid on this wine is medium plus, with medium body, finely grained tannins and a long elegant finish. Really beautiful wine. — 4 years ago

We all have that experience that we would love to undergo again, sans the memory, afresh: my first taste of peaty Scotch; the magnificent atmosphere of a Souls game; one’s first orgasm with a loved one; or, encountering a truly great, mature, Burgundy. Wipe the slate clean, let us start again; I’m sure that’s how we all clamor. But all that’s left is to forge on, in search of higher highs and the brighter lights. Nose: starts off tight, with dried, tart raspberries and strawberries, opens up to earth, oak, vanilla later, without overwhelming the fruit. Even a bit of perfumed peaches. Palate: layered light plums, juicy mid-ripe strawberries, gentle and super-silky tannins, extremely luscious mouthfeel. Finish: long, notes of stewed tea, recurrent umami and minerals. Puts the LONG in prolonged. Oh my. Oh. — 7 years ago

Cheers to the wines of South Africa 🇿🇦
This Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir is unique in that the grapes used to produce it primarily came, not from Hamilton Russell vineyards, but rather from neighboring vignerons.
Hamilton Russell made this unprecedented decision in the aftermath of devastating wild fires that imparted smoke taint to its estate-grown grapes. Unwilling to compromise on quality, I applaud Hamilton Russell for its tenacity and willingness to forge ahead to create this delicious Pinot Noir for its customers. 👏👏👏
This wine is comprised of fruit hailing from three different Hemel-en-Aarde (aptly meaning “heaven and earth”) Wards within the Walker Bay District, in the Cape South Coast Region of South Africa’s Western Cape.
This wine is a reflection of community, camaraderie, and commitment to excellence.❤️
👁 It is medium ruby with pale fuchsia rim variation.
👃 On the nose this wine has a medium(+) intensity of youthful aromas. The aromas include candied cherry, strawberry rhubarb preserves, violet, dried orange peel, white pepper, star anise, clove, and nutmeg.
👄 On the palate this wine is dry. It has medium(+) acidity, a medium body, medium alcohol, medium tannins, and medium intensity of flavors consistent with the nose. This wine has a medium finish.

Vintage 2002 - carignan and syrah, smell with minerals, chocolate, truffle, red summer fruit. Excellent drinking, now even better than one year ago. Wine that makes me happy. Thank you @Willem Jan Withagen — 9 years ago
