Viñedos de Alcohuaz

Grus de Alcohuaz 2015

Mezcla tina, or “Red Blend”
Syrah dominant, a helluva barnyard nose!
Heavier bodied, with bits of blueberry and apple skins, some sweet grass, tobacco, aged perfectly, (I got lucky), with the tannins complementing the star fruit acidity.
50% Syrah, 14% Petite Syrah, 26% Garnacha, 10% Petit Verdot.
100% Yum.

This is the first red wine I have had from this area, usually known for Pisco production.

Viñedos de Alcohuaz

Tococo de Alcohuaz Syrah 2015

Although priced a bit high, this non-certified bio-grower started in -05 in Chile and makes several high quality wines. Dense color; dark small berries, dark chocolate, spicy, elegant nose; and full, round mouthfeel with fine tannins, high acids, and a delicious long finish; moderate oak. I am a N Rhône fan, but this style (less meaty and stringent - more round and supple) works too. — 6 years ago

Viña Falernia

Falernia Reserva Valle de Elqui Syrah 2011

Probably the best Syrah in the world at this price point! Truly deserving of the Decanter world wine award! Smoked Meat & spice, violets, black pepper and beautiful blue and black berry fruit with a light handed touch in the winery. Not quite as good as the '10, but still smoking! — 9 years ago

De Martino

Single Vineyard Alto Los Toros Elqui Valley Syrah 2011

Nice Syrah! Violet with slightly orange edge. Very interesting nose, at first it has lots of mature red fruit, then it changed to a very meaty profile, also dried prunes, and violets. Medium acidity and low astringency but good permanency and nice aftertaste. De Martino is without a doubt one of my favorite Chilean producers. — 6 years ago

Elqui Valley Sauvignon Blanc

Peaches and pears, with some flowers and just a little grapefruit. Nice balance of acidity and fruit. This has some similarities to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but less grapefruit and less citrus overall. But still enough acidity. — 7 years ago

— 9 years ago

PX Blanc. I had to search all over Chile for this one. Fantastic. Most went Sancerre on the blind guess — 9 years ago

This was high on my lists of must-haves. A PX Blanc. Quite nice and dry. Harvested a high elevation to bring out the dryness. Above my head but it works and is a ton of fun to experience. If tasted blind, my mind might go to Bordeaux Blanc...maybe. — 10 years ago
